To make the world know and acknowledge the unique value of our project, our center of education is about
microalgae, genetic engineering technology and the unique significance of our project.
We especially designed an algal class to cover algae-related scientific knowledge, during which process we
unveil how synthetic biology adds power to algae. Additionally, we created a song for this algal class and
a set of the card game to imitate the algae cultivation lab work and integrate synthetic biology
knowledge. Our education activities covered more than 90,000 audiences through cooperation with
authorities and got the provincial award for scientific popularization. And our influential zone is not
restricted to China, we also created a video to introduce GMOs regulation by cooperating with
Sorbonne_U_Paris to let the wider community learn about GMOs.
Three striking characteristics could be spotted in our education efforts, namely three INs
(informative,
innovative, and inclusive). The informative part demonstrates the detailed design of our
education.
The
innovative part shows the shining point of our education. The inclusive part shows the
influence we pose
on the world through extensive education and cooperation. Due to the epidemic, our education activities
had to be executed online. Let us view our efforts in detail.
In view of chassis organism of our project, we designed an algal class, which lasts for more than 3 hours
and covers numerous intriguing scientific knowledge related to micro-algae. In this class, we analyze the
originality, development, fundamental function, frontier employment and biological mysteries of
micro-algae. After the gradual unveiling of marvellous microalgae by introducing its numerous functions,
we introduced our project of utilizing synthetic biology to enable magic algae to possess the magic power of
biofuel production.

For the originality part, we relate algae to the miracle of life, for it being the first monad on the
earth. As for the development of algae, we introduced its family branches, its transformation from monad
to muticellular organisms and how its photosynthesis brings more life miracles to the earth. With regard
to its fundamental function, various means to utilizing algae for basic necessities of life were
demonstrated. For the frontier employment part, we introduced our project of combining gene editing
technology with culturing special algae for biofuel production to the audience, as well as its
utilization in fancy clothes,building materials, cosmetics and so many other creative realms. At the end
of our class, we unveiled the mysteries behind its numerous functions from a biological perspective.
A song called those algae
Though the class lasts for a long time, we had especially recomposed a song called those algae, which
based on a very prestigious song called those flowers in China. The whole song compress the essence of
our
class, acting as a interim during the algal class to refresh our listeners.
A card game called Algal Lab
More surprisingly, as synthetic biology related knowledge seems unfamiliar and inaccessible to the public,
we created an educational game called algal lab, which intimates the whole process of utilizing algae to
produce bio-fuels in the lab. Also, we write a brochure for the game in great detail, including related
synthetic biology knowledge and play regulations.

This game has a total of 124 cards , including 24 algae cards, 30 culture medium cards, 30 function cards, 16 lipid cards, 24 property cards and 12 dice. And the game design has already been under the protection of national copyright.

To enlarge the public engagement, we cooperated with municipal and provincial authorities to propagandize
our project, attracting more than 90,000 people to get involved in our scientific propagation
activities
online.
Rongchengzhitan online forum with municipal authority
The municipal authority, Chengdu ecology and environment Bureau held a forum called Rongchengzhitan, which
means wisely making contribution to reducing carbon emissions. On this forum, we shared the inspiration,
the practical significance and technical cores of our project, trying to provoke the wisdom among citizens
towards reducing carbon emissions by utilizing small stuff around us, just like using microalgae for
bioduel production. Significant also, our PI, professor Tang Lixia, also did an online sharing whose topic
is “Bio-based plastic degradation technology”. This sharing given by our team received 26,000 likes in
total. Many citizens who participated in this online forum expressed their appreciation to our
environmental protection technology. An officials from Chengdu ecology and environment bureau
commented
that sharing of this kind could inspired some youth to study harder and learn cutting-edge technology to
make beneficial contributions to our society.

Online algal class and lab exploration with provincial authority
With the provincial authority, Sichuan Science and Technology Museum, we gave algal class on their live
platform due to the severity of COVID-19. We delivered algal class and led audience into our lab online to
see the algae growth and experiment apparatus, which attracted 90,100 audience in total to attend our
course. Positive feedbacks were given about our course. Some children said that they are very glad to
participate in our course, which teems with knowledge and happiness. Certain parents excitedly extend
their gratitude to us, claiming that course of this kind can contribute to broadening Children's horizons
as well as raising their interest in scientific knowledge.

Recognition of our efforts in education
Our online scientific classes received attention from various media and has been reported on municipal,
provincial and national levels of media for 12 times. Besides, we also got an provincial prize as
Excellent Scientific Popularization Brand.

GMOs regulation introduction video with iGEM teams from different countries
Due to most of iGEM products are GMOs, it is of vital importance to educate and benefit wider community by
introducing GMOs regulations in different countries, so as to promote communication and cooperation in
