Communication

Develop and implement education, science communication, and/or outreach materials related to synthetic biology.

Online Enrichment Programme

With the knowledge and technical support from 2 of our advisors, Ricky and Pius, our team has developed a system of self-learning materials. This self learning materials contains knowledge from basic biotechnological knowledge to skills in the SDS page. The system also includes a test at the end of each chapter to ensure that students have taken up all the knowledge in this chapter before they are granted the access to the next chapter .With this test system, we were able to select the top10% of students to be our new teammate this year.

We hope that through this self learning system, we could have ignited students' passion in studying biotechnology and also educating a wide range of students regarding basic biotechnological knowledge.

To ensure that lab safety could be fully implemented, all of our teammates will have to pass all 13 chapters of self-learning materials before they are allowed to perform any form of experiments in the laboratory. With the help of this system, our team could have put more effort into experiments rather than teaching new teammates regarding different biotechnological knowledge and lab safety rules.

A day with Professor Sun

Last August, we were invited to visit Professor Sun’s Laboratory. Professor Sun and his students have done a project which is also related to spider silk. They demonstrated how their silk project works and details of their project. Their work gives us a lot of inspiration towards our project and how we should continue our project in the future. Moreover, we received lots of compliments and advice from their team. We will adapt their kind suggestions to improve our project. Finally, we were given the reagent, plasmid from their laboratory. They also offered technical support toward our project. We really thank Professor Sun for giving us this opportunity to learn and know about spider silk.

Biotech workshop at CPU

The Carmel Pak U Secondary School had held a Biotech workshop in the past Summer. As the workshop includes some biotechnological experiments like digest and ligate, the workshop is only open to the top20% of people that have finished all 13 chapters in the self learning material to ensure that lab safety is always maintained. We hope that through this workshop, students could have learned the essential steps in making a plasmid and hence to raise their interest in both iGEM and biotechnology.

Although some of the students could not join us as part of the team this year, we hope that through this experience, their enthusiasm and passion in biotechnology could be ignited if not strengthened.

Finally, thank you Doctor for teaching us the essential technique in biotech. We will make good use of this technique for further development in our spider silk project.

Protein Gel Tutorial by PhD

On 13th August 2022, we held a day camp training workshop in Carmel Pak U Secondary School. Some of our iGEM team members, including our teachers, advisors, WYY and CPU students, participated in this workshop.

we are honored to invite a PhD candidate from The Chinese University of Hong Kong to demonstrate the process of protein electrophoresis. Our team treasures this opportunity by communicating with him regarding knowledge of running protein electrophoresis and preparing different solutions for protein electrophoresis.

Finally, please allow our team to take this opportunity to thank him for all the aid provided.

45th Fun day

The 4th of August was TWGHs Mrs Wu York Yu Memorial College 45th anniversary. We take this opportunity to set up a biotechnology booth to educate the junior form students.

To further enhance student’s passion in learning knowledge related to biotechnology and our project, we combined learning with entertainment. We hope that through this event, students’ awareness on the potential of biotechnology and interest in our project could be raised.

Furthermore, through this event, we hope that we have provided incentive to both junior form students and biology students such that they will pursue a career in biotechnology.
