In addition to weekly reporting and communication with the
FAFU-China
team, we also pay attention to long-term and in-depth communication and cooperation with the
FAFU team and other outstanding iGEM teams, as well as continuous improvement of the
experiment through high-level academic meetings and field visits to finished product
processing plants.
Overview
Our team members came from different majors in school; here many schools
gather to
. Although each of us was only good at one area, we built a more perfect team through
communication.
With the communication of all people, we pooled the wisdom of all people to complete our
project
together and enhance our friendship. As the famous quote says:the collective is the source
of power,
all is the cradle of wisdom.
Our mutual mission
Promote public science popularization.
Exchange and explore the experimental methods.
Integrate theories in different fields of biology.
1. Exchange and reflection with XMU-China
During this phase, we maintained a high frequency of communication, and we
visited
a number of
teams, companies and schools on a weekly basis. In addition to learning from their
experience, we
also provide food companies with our experimental ideas for beverage preparation.
What have we acquired from it?
We had an in-depth conversation with the igem team from Xiamen University
and the
FAFU team about
the igem competition. In this exchange, we know how to carry out HP activities, and our HP
activities should be based on the practical, and can be applied to the practical. For
example, if we
want to solve people's insomnia problem, we have to investigate the actual situation of
insomnia
people and find the solution to the problem according to their reasons.

(2) Content of the meeting
After the project presentation of each team, the
remaining participants
raised
questions on the
experimental design, modeling development, comprehensive practice and other aspects of the
project,
and shared their experiences.
In the free discussion session in the afternoon, all the
teams shared the
four
modules of
experimental design, modeling development, hp development and team management in more
detail. During
the whole process, we put the intractable problems encountered in our team on the table to
discuss
and learn from each other's strengths. Thanks to these two exchanges, the team of our school
gained
some instructive questions.

(3) Stage self-reflection
① Team mode
Most teams are in danger of not completing the final experiment, so
speeding up
the progress of
the experiment is the top priority.
The experimental group avoid all people do the same thing, the best
multi-threaded
task
All other activities revolve around the experimental group, focusing on
fit.
Capable students in the experimental group should gradually get out of the
experiment, communicate
with other groups, and control the whole situation.
② Experimental part
Xiamen University introduced their research results in the past three
years. It
can be seen that
innovation accounts for a large proportion of their projects and a mature narrative logic
has been
formed. For example, the newly introduced project has three parts: disease detection,
treatment and
prevention. The structure is very clear. We studied and modified the experimental design to
improve
the structure: the transfer of GABA key genes, the culture of high-yielding GABA longan, the
extraction of GABA and so on.
③ Human Practice & Education
The importance of communication between HP group and experimental
group
HP and the project content should be strongly related. We know how HP
guides the
focus of the
experiment and the social responsibility of the project through research. And the progress
of the
experimental group has a strong guiding effect on HP.
We consulted the data, collected how HP content and the experimental group
interact with each other,
and made the following plan:
HP influence experiment:
· Social needs influence experimental projects
· Laws, regulations and social policies affect experimental method raw materials, etc
· Market research to improve the experimental process
· Historical analysis, traditional customs, ethics and morals
· Promote experiments to produce more intuitive results and models
Effects of the experiment on HP:
· Decide to investigate relevant groups: direct users & potential product users
· Investigate relevant organizations & corporate groups: gains and losses
· Find relevant field experts
· Interdisciplinary groups such as computer, philosophy, ethics, legal experts for design
software
and other related supporting industries
Solve the problem of defective logic in HP group
To simplify our thinking, and to get to the point, given the final
formulation of our story,
we'll
match our own activities to the experiment. For example, in the experimental group, if the
three
parts of the design experiment are: the transfer of GABA key genes, the culture of
high-yielding
GABA longan and the extraction of GABA. Human practice is also divided into three parts:
gene
editing of the public and the questionnaire survey of sleep problems, the visit to the
Longan base
in the countryside, and the design of products (commercialization).
2. Joint practice——With China-FAFU
"Together with the Taijiang Committee of the Communist Youth League and
the Youth
Activity Center of
Taijiang District, we explored the mystery of our project with primary school students and
another
iGEM team China-FAFU.

To achieve our common goal, the China-FAFU team and us organized a
parent-child
event in Taijiang
District to educate teenagers and their parents about synthetic biology and gene editing.
The
activity was successful and the two teams got to know each other, paving the way for further
cooperation.
After that, the two teams held similar science popularization activities
together
many times. We
held many planning meetings together and formed a deep cooperative relationship.

3. Preliminary exploration -- participating in high-end biomedical forum
On June 11th, Fuzhou Strait International Convention and Exhibition Center
was
inaugurated in and
FAFU-China participated in the "Fuzhou Ocean Research Institute 2022 Marine Biomedicine
High-end
Forum" sponsored by Fuzhou Ocean Research Institute, Fuzhou Ocean and Fishery Bureau,
undertaken by
Fuzhou Ocean Research Institute Marine Medicine RESEARCH and Development Center.

In the forum, FAFU-China is about communicate with experts on the gene
editing
technology of marine
organisms, and further promote the development of marine biomedicine to unlock the mystery
of gene
editing.
On the forum, experts and professors made relevant explanations on gene
editing
technology. Sun
Song, academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and researcher of The
Institute
of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences gave a report entitled Deep-sea Extreme
Environment and
Life Detection: Special Organisms in Special Environments. Professor Xiaokun Zhang, dean of
School
of Pharmacy, Xiamen University, delivered a report entitled "Nuclear Receptor and Marine
Innovative
Drug Development". Professor Sulan Luo, academic dean of Guangxi University Medical College,
delivered a report entitled "preclinical study of a new non-addictive analgesic snail toxin
GeXIVA".
Prof. Du Guanhua, academician of The International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and
Institute of
Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College,
delivered a
report titled Progress in Pharmacology of Marine Drugs online. Professor Zhu Yizhen, the
first dean
from the school of Science and Technology of Pharmacy of Macau University, delivered a
report
entitled Discovery of Natural Drugs and Ideas of Marine Drug Development. In summary of the
above
reports, FAFU-China had a deeper understanding and reflection on the establishment of Longan
GABA
cell line and GABA gene editing. After the conference, we discussed the safety issues of
gene
editing technology and the development of biotechnology with experts and professors
attending the
conference.
Gene editing is a major technological revolution, which undoubtedly brings
many
benefits to all
aspects of human life. Especially taking the BBS on GABA editor for editing adopts the
principle of
critical inheritance of genes, dialectical view of the technology, then it is to establish
the high
GABA Longan cell line. The follow-up plans to use high yield cell fermentation tank
production
ramming foundation in the future is expected to realize factory production and extract the
GABA, in
order to better serve the pharmaceutical industry as well as benefit the cause of
mankind.
4. Scientific Dialogue -- Attend the 2022 National Academic Conference
This year, FAFU-CHINA sent representatives to attend the Chinese Society
of Plant
Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology. The annual meeting includes education and popular
science forum, interdisciplinary forum, young scholars forum and so on. In addition to
absorbing
cutting-edge discoveries and technical means related to plant molecular biology,
representatives
of FAFU-China also communicated with scholars after the meeting about numerous problems in
the
experimental process of this project, and gained a great deal of knowledge.

5. Product improvement - Food processing plant survey
On the afternoon of July 22nd, we went to Fuzhou Xicheng Food Co., LTD
with
Teacher Cao to conduct
an investigation on Longan beverage processing.
First, we had a meeting with the head of the West City Food Company about
food
production.

The person in charge explained some basic knowledge of juice making to us,
for
example, the
proportion of juice pulp made by the factory is usually 10%-20%. Apart from this, she showed
us
various types of beverage packaging shells, including PET bottles, PEP bottles, glass
bottles and
Tetra Pak paper containers. After the introduction of the basic knowledge from the manager,
we chose
Tetra Pak paper containers as the main reason is that Tetra Pak package has low cost, light
weight
and green environmental protection, and its shelf life is up to one year at room
temperature. At the
same time, aseptic cold filling technology can maximize the retention of nutrients in the
beverage
and effectively cover the pulp sedimentation phenomenon. After the consultation with Dr.
Cao, we
have reached an agreement with the factory that we plan to mass-produce Longan drinks.
Before the
mass production, we are responsible for determining the nutritional composition of the
drinks in the
pilot trial, and use the factory's trademark for processing and production. The packaging
can be
designed by us and the manufacturer after comparison.

After that, the manager led us to visit the factory assembly line, where
we watched the complete
process of Tetra Pak beverage processing and packaging. Also, we visited to learn the flow
chart of
the assembly line machine so as to have a basic understanding of the process of beverage
production.
