Description

According to The United Nations Development Programme, The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sometimes referred to as the Global Goals, were enacted by the United Nations in 2015 as a global call to action to eradicate poverty, safeguard the environment, and guarantee that by the year 2030, peace and prosperity will be experienced by everyone. The 17 SDGs understand that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability and that actions in one area will impact results in others.

Countries have agreed to give those falling behind the most priority while making progress. The SDGs aim to eradicate AIDS, hunger, poverty, and prejudice against women and girls. The SDGs must be achieved in every setting, which requires the entire population's creativity, knowledge, technology, and financial resources. To implement a part of the SDGs goals in our project, we targeted some goals such as good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, decent work, economic growth, industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

Good health and well-being goal

Among all diseases, dementia presently ranks as the seventh most common cause of mortality, according to the WHO. The most common dementia type, Alzheimer's, may be caused in 60–70% of cases.

To choose our project idea during our journey, we went through local and global problems in many fields such as environmental, medical, and manufacturing. Eventually, we chose to treat Alzheimer's as the seventh cause of death worldwide and has no treatment,so it's a critical threat to the SDGs goals by 2030. You can go through our wiki to know more about the project.

Quality education goal

We engaged in human practices, education, and public engagement work with individuals of various ages, ethnicities, learning styles, and educational backgrounds to explain our project and guarantee that our intent and scientific information were communicated in the most understandable and accessible way possible, and ensure that our findings were well-illustrated and accessible. We reached our community by spreading awareness books in our local language to be easily understood. Also, we translated the book into different languages to spread worldwide.

In addition, we made a comic book for kids to teach them the concept of synthetic biology. We made a lot of events for college students and high school students. We reached many people using our social media through videos and posts about our project, Alzheimer's, and Synthetic biology techniques. You can reach our Human practices and Education and communication pages for more details.

Gender equality goal

A sustainable future depends on eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls; it has been demonstrated that doing so promotes economic development, research, and progress. All of the tasks in our journey were divided equally among all members. We have 9 boys and 14 girls on our team, and we all have an essential role in raising the project's progress. All of the roles included women contributing to our achievements. Reach our inclusivity page to know more information.

Decent work and economic growth goal

We presumed a long-term and short-term business model to accomplish our project from a commercial perspective. Our goal of developing a commercial drug that every patient may utilize requires a lengthy procedure. And as we noted on the proposed implementation page, this is due to several rules and financial concerns. As a result, we thought up a short-term strategy to develop a product to raise money for our long-term research plan to apply the cure. Most Alzheimer's sufferers find out they have the condition in its latter stages and when they are elderly. Consequently, the treatment protocol gets more difficult. Therefore, we considered a diagnostic tool (Smartwatch software) feature that might be incorporated into smartwatches to identify the disease's indicators. In addition, based on our pipeline for protein modeling, we created a software tool for our dry lab work as a public tool for scientists. These combined are a plan for a long process of research and development to fund our project to reach the cure for this silent disease. You can know more details on our entrepreneurship page.

Industry, innovation, and infrastructure goal

Promoting sustainable development and investing in scientific research and innovation is crucial. In our treatment system, we demonstrated novel ways of degradation of the proteins. Two systems in our project are: triggering the natural pathway of the degradation of proteins in the cell and targeting the protein by a switchable protease system to be inhibited when the target protein doesn't exist. This is considered an innovation in the degradation and targeting systems as we raised the specificity and inhibited the side effects using the switchable protein system. Also, we chose biodegradable and biocompatible nanocarriers with the least harmful to human health. You can go through our project description in our wiki. Finally, we tried to achieve the most compatible goals with our project, and we reached 5 goals out of 17. Synthetic biology can greatly impact the world and the SDGs by 2030. It interferes with all fields, and using it properly can raise the boundaries of the world's progress to reach a better life and a great society.
