Overview

From the beginning, we wanted to build a project which is responsible and good for the world. This has been carried out through two main axis:

  1. 1. Integrated Human Practices

  2. 2. Education and Communication.

Synthetic biology provides a new way to solve many problems encountered in society. However, most people know very little about it. In order to spread synthetic biology to all kinds of the public as much as possible, and we believe that communication in scientific research is the most critical, in order to promote our projects and gain more opportunities to communicate with the public, we have carried out many practical activities, such as a variety of campus activities, a time-space post office and a charity sale jointly held with NWU-China and NPU-CHINA, as well as communication with other iGEMers, the characteristic part is that a game "Gene! Gene!" has been designed and a website has been set up for the public to access relevant information.

2-1 Determine the content and audience of education

In early April, XJTU-China and SUSTech-Shenzhen jointly held a publicity activity on the campus. During this period, we stimulated students' interest by distributing leaflets to introduce synthetic biology and igem competitions, as well as projects in previous years, and distributed questionnaires to conduct research on synthetic biology. Finally, we designed different education themes for primary school students and high school students based on the research content and the previous interview with Professor Hu Zhaonong.

2-2 Open dialogue with the audience as much as possible

Objective:

  • Taking into account the low acceptance of knowledge, and in order to stimulate public enthusiasm as much as possible, we designed a colorful, simple and vivid game to attract attention.
  • Website: igem.fun
  • Specific operation: click the small icon, then collect three small icons to eliminate them and finally win by eliminating all icons.
  • Learn more about synthetic biology, iGEM and XJTU China through our platform (http://igem.fun/aboutus/index.html).
  • By promoting the number of visits to our website up to 400+ visits per day, we have gained the attention and consultation of many people and achieved our goal.

2-3 Carry out synthetic biology activities on campus

Launch health initiatives

Audience: Children in poor mountainous areas, senior high school student, other public

2-3-1. For primary school students, after a heated discussion, members chose to interact with children through games designed by us to help them understand synthetic biology simply. Finally, it came down to our project, from pesticide residues to cherishing food, to issue initiatives. However, affected by the incertain sanitary situation, we took the form of video lectures and contacted Xijie Primary School located in Luonan County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province. Because the school is in a poor area, children know little about cutting-edge scientific research. Therefore, we hope that through our efforts, we can piece together a colorful synthetic biology world in the hearts of children. In addition, we also uploaded it to Bilibili, a comprehensive video website, with hits of 100+.

2-3-2. For senior high school students, members designed more in-depth but also easy to understand content. By comparing the differences between synthetic biology and genetic engineering, they deeply understood the subtleties of synthetic biology, and promoted interesting and intelligent iGEM gold medal projects, such as bacterial fragrance, to improve senior high school students' understanding of synthetic biology, During this period, we showed how the logic in engineering can be well applied to synthetic biology, and exchanged the application of synthetic biology in herbicide agriculture. High school students expressed their interest and looked forward to participating in the next iGEM competition as high school students.

After the Northwest Exchange Conference, we reached a cooperation intention with NWU-CHINA-A and NPU-CHINA, and then we carried out a time-space post office and a charity sale, which greatly promoted the friendship between the three universities, effectively promoted the spread and popularization of synthetic biology and iGEM competitions, and our projects also gained the opportunity to communicate with students in different professional fields in the school.

A time-space post office: The postcards made by our three schools are used as the carrier. This year, iGEMers of XJTU mainly designed two postcards with the themes of "How much do you know about synthetic biology" and "blue light induced compound functional biological fertilizer", in order to expand the influence of synthetic biology and iGEM competitions and obtain more opportunities to exchange our topics. In the end, we have collected many questions and opinions, as well as our blessings to the cooperative institutions. We will feed back all the information one by one, so as to achieve a friendly two-way exchange between teachers and students of our school, between iGEMers and non iGEMers, and between cooperative institutions.

Charity sale activity: we obtained money by selling the articles designed by ourselves and donated by the cooperative schools. The final accumulated amount was 751 yuan. In the name of the iGEM team of three schools, we donated to the "Hope Project 1+1 Student Assistance Action" of the China Youth Development Foundation. We hope that our modest efforts can help children in poor mountain areas receive better education.

2-5 Project Promotion

In the process of scientific research, communication is essential for us. In order to disseminate knowledge as much as possible to all kinds of the public, we have made important efforts to communicate.

Promoting our project and sharing our experiences were also a way for us to:

  • show the possibilities of synthetic biology.
  • make our project and the production of herbicide by microorganisms accepted.
  • allow exchanges with other teams or specialists and thus to be able to benefit from their knowledge.

Official accounts WeChat is a very convenient social platform in China. We use official accounts to publish articles containing interesting synthetic biology research content, progress of our project, and publicity of some activities. This way of communication allows us to reach out to more people and help them understand our work.

Instagram We often communicate on social networks, especially on Instagram. It is very important for us to keep in touch with other international iGEM teams or professionals. It is always full of vitality and is an effective tool to connect relevant people and the younger generation.

iGEM China Community During the whole competition, we will pay attention to the news from each team every day, and timely exchange and help each other. This community is convenient for keeping in touch with other iGEMers and for them to understand our work.
