Overview
Our team has decided to concentrate all their attention on inclusivity issues.
Everyone has the right to receive an education and our team has made great efforts to make it happen.
Each of us is equal and that's why we decided to focus our attention on vulnerable segments of society.
Talk about orphans and people with disabilities. Our team realized the importance of this direction.
In addition, our team had participants who had experience in communicating with such people, so we decided to start our journey.
Language inclusivity
Due to the peculiarities of our state, the official languages of which are Kazakh and Russian,
as well as due to the global impact of the English language, our team used during the implementation of the project.
We used all 3 of the above languages in our social networks, which can be seen on our Instagram
https://instagram.com/shym_bil_nis_igem?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=,
as we understood the
importance of involving the audience in our project, both in our
country and abroad. In addition, we translated all our works and files used for educational work for groups of the population who speak only one language.
Also, due to the
non-proliferation of materials related to science in the Kazakh language, we created a
book about synthetic biology, where we talked about the problem of environmental pollution with
PET products and about the scientific method of solving this problem.
A team from Cambridge University also helped us in this, because they made a huge contribution to increasing the amount of information in
English language by writing a book about the creation of new genetic biological schemes for the production of necessary protein molecules and compounds.
And we translated it into Kazakh and Russian, thereby sharing the book with students from middle and senior schools.
Socially vulnerable categories
Our team has focused its attention on certain groups of the socially vulnerable stratum of society:
Deaf and dumb
Orphans
Disabled people of groups 1 and 2
On September 11, we visited a boarding school for the deaf and dumb in our city.
Since then we have visited this boarding school twice. We have become very close to all the students,
and now we are actively in touch with them. During this time, we have helped more than 50 teenagers of our age
to learn more about synthetic biology and about the problem of environmental pollution with plastic.
They also actively participated in each of our classes, making the most of their efforts.
At the end, we presented them our author's coloring book, which depicted illustrations related to the theme of our project.
On September 17, we went to the Kausar boarding school for orphans.
The main difference between our meeting and others was that it was attended by people of various ages,
ranging from children to teenagers. For this reason, we have prepared various materials for their training
and also showed them our project promotion video. In addition, this boarding school was designed for female representatives.
According to the statistics of our country, there are several times fewer women who received higher education from 2012 to 2019 than men.
This suggests that higher education is not entirely accessible, especially for women, given that the quality of knowledge in boarding schools is lower than in average schools.
So, we wanted to develop girls' interest in science, thereby contributing to an increase in the rate of higher education for women.
On October 1, we held a meeting with disabled people of groups 1 and 2, to whom we told about synthetic biology
and shared with them about the importance of environmental protection, showing our photographs, which were made
together with the volunteer organization "New Wave". We also told them about our school synthetic biology club,
the concept of which was aimed at developing students' research skills through in-depth study of subjects
(biology, chemistry, physics and computer science). We tried to interest them in science by telling them the history
of the creation of synthetic biology, and we also talked about how this field helps to solve many problems around the world.
