Sharing knowledge has been one of the main values of our team throughout our journey. In our city, few people know about synthetic biology, therefore our team has been tasked to handle this matter!
Firstly, we divided our target audience into different groups based on the age of our listeners: kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, teachers and adults. We have developed our individual approach to each group of people, talking about the basics of synthetic biology, its possibilities, as well as the problem of environmental plastic pollution!
The most prevalent way to help people understand synthetic biology and its application in the real world is creating books. so
It is obvious that pictures and figures appeal children more than boring words and terms. And since the science of synthetic biology is too complex and is not easily understandable, our team has found a great solution to make it much more easier and attractive it to them by creating a coloring book!
There we have illustrated the basis of synthetic and molecular biology with examples of our plastic pollution problem. This book clarifies such questions as what is it, how it works, how can it help and etc. In order to capture wider range of audience, we had translated this coloring into English, Russian and to our native language - Kazakh.
Our team has prepared a special program and opened a club of synthetic biology for students of Nazarbayev Intellectual School of chemistry and biology in Shymkent, which was approved by the methodological council of our school.
The proposed program of the «Club of synthetic biology» is intended for students of 10-12 grades of general-education schools, as well as for students of Nazarbayev Intellectual school. The course lasts for 64 hours in one school year, with a two-hour teaching period per week.
The program of the club is composed in accordance with the concept of development of biological sciences and is aimed at development of research skills of students, through in-depth study of subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, informatics, programming) and formation of applied abilities. The programme summarizes and systematizes information on the diversity of living organisms, forms an understanding of the state of wildlife as well as modern society, acquaints students and broadens their horizons in the application of developments in biotechnology and genetic engineering, helps students to participate in the search for solutions to the problems associated with the pace of development of modern society and humanity on Earth.
