Enjoying synthetic biology

On 7.11 ,we started our summer camp and the opening ceremony was held by our team NJTech_China and our professor Jinagling. We introduced our subject during the meeting and Professor Zhu shared both cutting-edge synthetic biology knowledge and laboratory safety knowledge with the students.

We emphasized the importance of the laboratory safety to the students guided them to visit our lab and learn hoe to use the experimental instruments.We also invited many Professors to let show high school students the beauty of synthetic biology During the 5-day camp,our NJTech_China team member led high school students to do the classic and obvious Blue-White Screening experiment ,followed by an interesting of creative painting using strains that introduced different chromoprotein genes as “pigments”.

After the first summer camp,we received great numbers of positive comments and we decided to carry out the second camp in order to share the synthetic biology knowledge with more high school students.So on 7.25,we started our second summer camp.

"Enter the Legal World of Synthetic Biology"

We find that people do not know enough about synthetic biology, "What is synthetic biology?" This question does not have a precise answer for most people. At the same time, there is relatively little awareness of the laws related to synthetic biology. Therefore, we are addressing this issue by publishing this article to educate the public about the concept of synthetic biology and the legal awareness of synthetic biology.

This article first introduces the concept of synthetic biology and discusses whether synthetic biology has all the benefits and none of the harms. The second half of the article focuses on the laws and regulations for synthetic biology in various countries. The United States has issued regulations for synthetic biology such as the Coordinated Framework for Biotechnology Regulation, while the European Union, Japan and Australia have similar regulatory systems and do not have specific legislation for synthetic biology, based on the regulatory framework for GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

"IGEM Summer Camp in Progress"

Professor Xue Chong, Vice Dean of the School of Bioengineering and PhD supervisor from Dalian University of Technology, gave a presentation on the progress and prospects of bioenergy research, which brought cutting-edge scientific and technological knowledge and broadened the horizons of the young team members. At the same time, we opened a live online conference and pushed the conference link in the public number, inviting the public to participate in the live lecture and learn about synthetic biology experiments online.
