Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. As promoters and users of synthetic biology technology, we always put SDGs in our minds and try to use our thinking and actions to promote their impact and changes in our lives. The ultimate goal of every scientific action is to improve human well-being, which is the original intention and value of our project. We practice the principles of SDGs in education, implementation, design and many other stages, and call on more people to join us.

Science education is an important part of science communication and the embodiment of its core value. As we complete our projects, we always aim to bring better education to more people and facilitate equity in education. Our education adheres to the combination of online and offline, language and writing. We disseminate knowledge about synthetic biology and microbial fuel cells to our audience, while at the same time cultivating their lofty ideals and aspirations, and establishing the concept of safety and ethics. From campus lectures to popular science, we provide more ordinary citizens with educational opportunities. Considering the lack of high-quality educational resources in mountainous areas, we have also built an educational platform for children in mountainous areas so that they can continue to receive high-quality resources from the outside world. The popular science work we did in the questionnaire touched all levels of society and allowed them to see a new world full of hope. We believe that through our efforts, the power of high-quality education can give more people knowledge, help them build a healthy personality, and create their own value. Biomass energy is generally recognized as clean energy. Our project is based on the new transformation idea of microbial fuel cells(MFC), which effectively improves the power generation efficiency of MFC. Therefore, we choose the organic matter in sewage as our energy source, which can realize the conversion of waste chemical energy into clean electricity. This is a new type of clean energy production scheme.

After listening to the needs of target users and conducting targeted exploration, we also found that adopting our solution can save at least 5 million yuan a year for a sewage treatment plant. This will drastically reduce the cost of electricity, enabling more people to use the electricity we generate, thereby promoting life quality of many.

Our project has focused on the global climate crisis from the very beginning. We note that an important part of the climate crisis is global warming, and the massive emissions of greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming. Therefore, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is an important countermeasure to deal with the climate crisis. The widespread burning of fossil fuels has resulted in large-scale carbon emissions, so we have finally set our sights on alternatives to fossil fuels – MFC. By improving the MFC, we have significantly improved its power generation efficiency, enhanced its practicability, and designed a corresponding implementation plan to put it into practical use. Our action on the climate crisis is also reflected in the ongoing MFC science communication campaign for the public. In every meeting, lecture, and course on MFC, we appeal to the audience to act together to combat climate change. We hope that, through our actions, we will provide a new perspective on the climate crisis from an energy perspective, and enable the communities we come in contact with to increase awareness of the climate crisis and to put it into practice with us.
