Overview

The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as SDGs, are a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all. The goals set out the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.


Science and sustainability are inextricably linked, so when we designed our project, we also incorporated sustainability goals into every aspect of our project.

We have mainly focused on several sustainability goals:

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

As the global economy continues to grow, the number of less economically developed countries worldwide is gradually dropping. At the same time, the gradual economic growth has also achieved the development of agriculture such as animal husbandry. Therefore, people in more and more areas have the financial base to consume meat products in an increase trend. However, with the increase of people's consumption of high-purine foods such as meat, hyperuricemia as a special disease has gradually become common in daily life. It should be noted that since the harm of high uric acid level is not immediate, it would accumulated unconsciously and causes uremia, gout and other diseases. Therefore, it is particularly important to check one’s own uric acid level regularly. This is why we think our painless uric acid detector conforms to the third goal “Health and Well-being” in SDGs, since our device resolves both the problem of testing pain-fear patients and the problem of inconvenience of testing in hospital.

We created a dedicated Wechat channel in order to help a larger audience. In the channel, we have a special "Painless Recipes" section. Whether it is egg porridge with minced meat or eggplant fried with minced meat, we step down the production process clearly and simply, which makes easy for patients with hyperuricemia to make the meals. The “Painless recipes” aren’t specialized for the hyperuricemia patients, but also play a preventive role for other members of the public. People can properly improve the daily diet recipes according to our article.


Goal 4 Quality education

Education is considered one of the most significant parts for the further development and better publicity of our team. It is the basic foundation to develop all of the biological research and invest in the appealing investigation in synthetic biology. Our group highly values the importance of education to spread and convey our ideas to the extensive potential people and earnestly complies with this principle.

Considering the prevalence and high propagation speed of the Internet, our group put emphasis on online activities to spread our ideas. We set up our WeChat media platform, which was composed of a general explanation of synthetic biology concepts, the latest synthetic biological progress summary and updates, and some vivid illustrations in late June in order to gather more and more viewers and followers.

Furthermore, our group further promoted in-depth activities, such as offline educational sessions in schools, forums with on-street booths, and pamphlet spreading, to gradually permeate our ideas. Imparting relative knowledge to the unknowns and making use of figurative analogies and interesting graphs to explain, we rendered people with a general understanding of our project. With the purpose of enlarging the target group, we carefully designed multiple elaborate and educational booklets, which are made up of some basic information about synthetic biology, inspiration, and current development of our project, to distribute to different people. In addition to producing offline lectures or interesting lessons, we also published various kinds of questionnaires and surveys to collect more data about the understanding of our project of the masses.

Moreover, we held many conferences with counterparts that were also interested in synthetic biology. 2022 CCIC conference, “Night Talk” conference, and other particular conferences altogether associated our group with more people and a large number of outside information. In this way, more valuable opinions of synthetic biology or our project could meet each other and be conflicted to germinate novel ones.

Fourthly, our group devised and made two different illustration books about DNA replication, transcription and translation, and laboratory safety, which enabled our group to share the information with younger kids, providing them a chance to keep in touch with the mysterious biological world. We then designed some wonderful cookbook recipes to help specific patients that suffered from high uric acid to better regulate their diet and temper their current health situation.

From these offline and online activities mentioned above, we strived for expanding our influence groups so that we could reach more and more people to convey to them our group’s project and our ideas. Through various approaches to education, our group got closer and closer to our goal to introduce unfamiliar knowledge to the masses.


Goal 12 Responsible consumption and production

It is commonly believed that enabling the implementation of a large number of synthetic biology research and further investigation about some appealing animal behavior or phenomenon, safety serves as the most important foundation in IGEM competition. Highly value the principle of safety, our team strictly catered to its requirements and has conducted lots of different kinds of activities to ensure a congenial and safe environment for the experiments.

In the first place, we carefully set up standards for people entering the laboratory in order to protect the safety of the researchers and the normal implementation of various experiments. People who entered the lab were required to wear protective garments, goggles, masks, and rubber gloves, which prevented them from some potential dangers that existed in the lab, such as toxic substances and highly corrosive solutions. Researchers also needed to follow the safety instructions to proceed with their experiments, which rendered reliable and precise data for the project and future development.

Furthermore, our team paid high heed to the purity and secure measurement of different substances that were made use of in the experiments. Biological experiments could not be accurately produced and developed without the meticulous and safe operation of different devices and treatments of various kinds of substances done by researchers. With the incorrect operation of substances, chemical agents were more likely to be polluted and disseminated some harmful particles through the air into other pure solutions, which resulted in extensive contamination in the lab and a failed experiment. In order to avoid this negative consequence, our team members conducted lots of things, such as using alcohol spray to clean our hands before experimenting, carefully and correctly utilizing the tools and adding the solution and putting the useless things into the required places to meet the demand.

Our group put a strong emphasis on the implementation of safety and arranged a lot of things to be aware of during our experiments. We used personal protections to protect the researchers from experiments that harbor potential danger and carefully deal with the chemical substances or agents that were utilized during the research to acknowledge the accuracy and safety of our experiment
