OVERVIEW

LZU-HS-Pro-B is made up of a group of high school students, who are obsessed with the profound knowledge and compelling phenomenon of synthetic biology. Hyperuricemia has become the fourth “habit disease” with its overall prevalence rate of 13.3% in China and a younger trend, which renders accumulation of uric acid in human body and is likely to result in serious diseases like gout. The negative consequence will readily generate pain and torture to the patients. In order to facilitate the detection of uric acid and remind both the masses and patients about the severity of hyperuricemia, our team devised and developed a novel type of household uric acid detector that enabled people to measure their health condition conveniently. We designed feasible installation methods, which offered people more conveniency, and easy-to-read illustration of results (to estimate with whether there is light) for our uric acid detector. In this way, it largely saves people’s time since they do not have to go to the hospital to detect it. Our household uric acid detector harbors a strong potential to germinate positive influence in society.

The Formation of LZU-HS-PRO-B

LZU-HS-Pro-B is a strong and eclectic team, composing of 25 high school students who craze for the mystery and fun of biology and highly care about the development of the whole society, from Shenzhen Senior High School Group International Division, Suzhou Foreign Language School, Shanghai Pinghe School, Suzhou High School of Jiangsu Province, New channel xian, Malvern college Chengdu Xinjin, Changsha WES Academy, Shanghai Guanghua Cambridge International School, American International School of Guangzhou, WLSA Shanghai Academy, International department of the Affiliated High School of South China Normal University, East China Normal university second attached middle school, Bancroft School, Saint James School, Dulwich International High School Suzhou, Shanghai world foreign language School, Paramus catholic high school, SDSZ International Department, Center Jiangsu Tianyi High School, Hangzhou High School, Yew Wah International Education School Guangzhou Campus, Shanghai New Epoch Bilingual School. In July 2022, most of the team members gathered in Shanghai to engage in the experiments of detecting uric acid at the Shanghai Intertek company. Meanwhile, the team members, participating in experiments, actively kept in touch with the online members to follow up the team’s progress, communicate and cooperate with each other, and complete all the projects together.

Tianhao Wei

In our team, I mainly focused on human-practice related tasks. For example, although I couldn't conduct in-person experiments due to the Covid 19 travel restrictions, I was able to spread the information and tips offered by my teammates in the form of recipe suggestions for those patients suffering from high uric acid diseases. By designing those recipes and materializing the abstract concepts of our study into practical tips, I contributed to the human practice of our project. I'm also responsible for translating some of the articles written by other teammates as I'm slightly more proficient in English.

Jiaqi Yan

In this project, I am mainly responsible for art and design. I contribute to the team by engaging in the offline experiment. Illustrating picture book relevant to synthetic biology about translation and transcription for education purposes, and producing lab safety cartoons. Moreover, I made animations about the gene circuit our group designed and worked on wiki's art designs. Also, I actively advertise our project and synthetic biology in the community and school by sharing our low uric acid diet and translation& transcription picture book.

Baoyi Huang

I contributed to the team by engaging in offline experiment and discussions, writing education and collaboration passage block, designing and translating our low uric Acid diet, and holding lectures in my community and at school to share perspectives about synthetic biology and to publicize our cause. I am also in charge of helping our team leader organize collaboration activities with sesame team and communicate with their team leader. Being the artistic director, I am also in charge of management and assigning tasks to team members.

Jinwen Xu

I’m Xu Jinwen. I am mainly in charge of the wet part. During offline lab time, I recorded the data and the steps of our experiment, and I summarized some of the lectures to support our experiment. Then I made our experiment flow chart at the end of our experiment. Moreover, I also use my mathematical knowledge to write the document of the modeling part which was discussed by our model team. Then I actively promote the work of our team in our school and community, which aimed at the correlated biological education of the third party. I also found a teenager who has hyperuricemia that could help with our interview. Being a group member, I’ve done a bunch of work to help our group and hope UA Besties could gain our final honor.

Wenfei Zhang

I am responsible for the commercial parts of our project. I am the marketing consultant of our team. I contact and communicate with partner companies and authorities people in the industries, make business models, and prepare sales and financial plans. Also, I gathered market research reports and finished the analyses.

you Zhu

I designed and painted the team logo and mascot, which won all the team members’ hearts as the draft was shown. I helped to paint the picture book for the science population: one main character and some background pictures are designed by me. I also drew a stop-motion animation for publicity of our team, and the main animation to briefly introduce our project.

During the offline period, I helped to manipulate the experiments. I also helped to write some work forms and modified the safety form.

Jiarui Zhang

My job is to rewrite the literature on synthetic biology in a more easily understandable way so that as many people as possible can understand to educate people of synthetic biology knowledge.

Yinxiang Cheng

During the summer intensive training process, I worked on the team mainly with other team members to complete the safety forms and subsequent repair work. At the same time, I also collaborated with other members to complete a few academic masses. I was mainly involved in the proof of concept. Together with the coach, I completed the revisions and did the translation work.

Xinyue Fang

I’m mainly responsible for completing the safety form, engineering success and collaboration with Lzu-HS-China-C.

Lucy Dong

I worked with other team members on the wiki sections of SDG, enterprising, and contribution. I participated in the wet lab experiments as well as writing for the wiki page. Also, I actively engage in round table conferences to discuss symbiotic information.

Haoyang Lin

I translated parts of the terms, organized teammates’ contributions, and Wrote the part “communication”.

Peicong Wu

I analyzed the previous gold award case, like SZ-SHD, how to develop the education section and goals among group members. Besides, she devised ideas and concepts for two picture books of the group about replication, transcription, and translation of DNA and laboratory safety. She then simplified some technical terms like operon and primer into plain languages so that the masses were able to better understand. Meanwhile, she was mainly responsible for conducting various experiments of detecting uric acid with other team members. She also engaged in parts of copywriting of the education section, inclusivity section, safety section, attribution sections (overview and formation), and SDG sections (education and safety).

Huaiyu Ruan

I mainly contributed to practice research, experimental data, social media, and other groups. In the experiment stage offline, I consulted the top journal papers and completed the abstract analysis of the papers. In addition, I record the experimental operation process and experimental data and sort them into a document, then publish them on our team's public account. Also, I explained biological nouns in simple and popular language for the public to see. I completed the task of practical investigation, made extensive research on the number of annual physical examinations and the most important indicators, and completed a series of video copies and reports after the research.
