In the virtual welfare speech on July 16, we invited some guests as our audience including graduate students, doctors, representatives of pharmaceutical companies, and junior high school students. This speech was hosted for mutual communication.
In our speech, we provided our audience with a new way of thinking and problem-solving in terms of diabetes drugs and diabetes treatment by targeting Foxo1. At the same time, we also introduced some background research and our experiment design so that junior high school students and patients can learn more relevant knowledge. After that, we also promoted our WeChat Official Account, peripheral products, and micro-shops.
In the second half of the online speech, we conducted a question-and-answer session. Some graduate students were very interested in our new research ideas and actively asked us many questions, we answered and exchanged opinions with them, and both of us benefited a lot. Some people from the community who attended to listen to our speech also showed great interest in our project research. Among them, a coffee shop owner not only supported and appreciated our solution and project results but also committed to offering us his coffee store as the activity space and coffee for free as a support for our project.
In addition, many guests also shared many insights about the topic. One of our guests, Prof. Li Ping is MD, a chief physician as well as a master tutor of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, who has abundant experience in the field of diabetes study. She studied at Harvard Medical School Diabetes Center for one and a half years; is also a young member of the Chinese Medical Association Diabetes Branch, the secretary of the pregnancy group, and member of the Diabetes Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association. Her specialties include Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and complications, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic diseases of pregnancy, pituitary, adrenal glands, gonads, parathyroid glands, and other endocrine diseases.
We also had other participants from Denmark's Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., France's Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals, the United States Eli Lilly, Merck Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Hansoh Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and a graduate student and doctor of the Department of Endocrinology, Shengjing Hospital Affiliated to China Medical University. These great guests shared a lot of their views on diabetes and its treatment.
It shall be mentioned that after the speech, we received a special thanks letter from Chen Keli, the student representative of Grade 1 class 3 of Jianping West School where he said that the students in their class learned a lot and benefited a lot. The specific content of the letter is shown as follows:
We seek an opportunity to communicate directly with the public thus we went to the street with our brochures.
Our brochure is three-fold with 6 pages in total. In the brochure, we incorporated the social background we investigated for diabetes and our research direction. Besides, we annexed our series of designed peripheral products on the last page. The educational purpose of the brochure was to inform people about this serious social issue and our endeavor to contribute to the progression of diabetes.
We also designed a poster where we put several suggestions on preventing diabetes, like 35-minute walking per day. We were sharing these good tips with the public in order to remind people of keeping good habits and a healthy lifestyle.
With those sophistically created brochures containing Chinese information easy to understand, we wandered through more than 7 streets in Zhangjiang District in Shanghai to distribute those educational brochures. Many recipients of the brochures explained their genuine passion for supporting our cause which motivated us to always step forward in the project.
We have published numerous articles which not only record our daily progression of the project including the main discoveries of the experiments and the society’s advocation but also share some knowledge regarding diabetes, like the article “iGEM Sugar Fox/Take You Into the World of Diabetes’ Patients” in figure 5 where we introduced the two types of diabetes and the interpretation of some relative items like gluconeogenesis.
On the most intense days, we wrote articles everyday in order to spread the idea behind our project - society should pay more attention on diabetes as one of the most serious chronic disease in every nation. In every single article, we would always first introduce the most useful information delivered with the record of our dry groups’ team’s work, and then incorporate certain content from the wet team’s experiments which can be understood by the public in order to convey our intention of improving the situation primarily in Chinese society.
The videos we upload to the Bilibili serve the purpose of recording our activities whenever we got together to brainstorm and document to visualize our outcomes. With the videos contenting the pictures of our team members, as high school teenagers, gathering together, hopefully, we aim to inspire more students all around the globe to start acting when they found the social issues they found to be noticeable. Through our videos, we are conveying encouraging information and the steps demonstrated in those can help anyone who wants to do such things with introduction and instruction.
Articles on Twitter are translations of the Chinese articles we posted on China's biggest social platform by our American and British team members which serve the same purpose as the Chinese version on our WeChat Official Account.
Little Red Book is a popular social media platform in China and many people in other Asia areas also make posts on Little Red Book to communicate with each other. Therefore, we created an account on Little Red Book and posted some pictures or posters for promoting our project and our concerning issue in order to spread the impact.
In order to promote our team and our work, and also encourage the future iGEMers to pursue their goals, we composed an original song - “iGEM WAVE”. This song has been uploaded to Netease Cloud Music and is free to share.
