Communication and Education
Background and Overview
With the development of science and technology, people's living standard is getting higher and higher, but with the improvement of the quality of life, the quality of the environment is decreasing. We are aware of this serious situation and want to contribute to this green earth, our project brings a more eco-friendly way to produce the important raw material, n-butanol.
While conducting our research, we also posted some research reports and scientific articles on WeChat Official Accounts, Bili Bili and other social media platforms. We hope to help the public to have a better understanding of our topic and synthetic biology through these channels.
In addition, we noticed that people very near us also lack knowledge about n-butanol and biosynthesis according to the survey result. Hence, we conducted an online lecture and invited people around us to attend for educational purposes.
WeChat Official Account

After our WeChat Official Account was on the air, we posted our first article. In this article, we firstly introduced iGEM, then our team as well as our project.

We also posted some educational articles to introduce biosynthesis to the public. As shown above, we wrote the article “Popularization of Science! Learn about biosynthesis and technology from scratch!”. In this article, we generally describe the basic concepts of biosynthesis and make some comments on the future of biosynthesis. Our purpose is to make the public aware of biosynthesis technology and how this can impact our social life. We hope they can know more about the knowledge related to biology and further understand our project.
Bili Bili Channel
Figure 3.Homepage of our Bili Bili channel
Bili Bili is a popular social media platform in China where people could post videos or articles and follow each other. Besides, we also noticed that Bili Bili set up several columns so that users could filter columns to post as well as search for different articles or videos. Therefore, we decided to create our Bili Bili Channel and apply the column “Technology” to our articles so that we could specifically locate those followers who intend to find some scientific articles to read.
Figure 4. Bili Bili article: “Surprising replacement of gasoline by n-butanol?!”
One of the articles we posted on our Bili Bili Channel is about how gasoline could be replaced by n-butanol. This article describes the advantages of n-butanol as a new energy source, so we need to find a new way to produce n-butanol and then obtain greater benefits. It could draw more attention of the public to n-butanol which is more eco-friendly than gasoline as an energy resource.
Online Lecture
Figure 5. Online lecture poster
On the evening of July 22nd, our team made an online speech through the Tencent Meeting platform, mainly describing our project and research objectives, as well as our current research progress and relevant research reports.
Figure 6. We were presenting the slide to our audience.
In this lecture, we invited around 30 more audiences to attend the online meeting. Our lecture started with a team introduction, including who we are, what our goal is, and how we plan to do it. After that, we presented our peripheral products and explained what our logo means.
The educational purpose of this lecture was to make the public know more about n-butanol and Lactobacillus casei which are the main topics in our project and according to our survey, these two were not familiar to most people. Therefore, we prepared many slides to describe n-butanol, including its molecular structure, its properties, and its promising application, Lactobacillus casei the same. We also shared our literature investigation results regarding these two topics.
Promotion and Communication
In order to attract more followers to our project, we designed our peripheral products with our logo attached which could always remind the users of our project and our goal.

We hope that through our peripheral products, the public can pay more attention to us and support us, to help us publicize our environmental protection concept. During our charity sale activity, we introduced our project to the passers and we had a discussion about our project solution and our goal.

School Newspaper Contribution
On August 26th, we contacted the person in charge of the school newspaper of our school (Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School At Yangzhou) to publish an article about our project "Lactobacillus fermentation to produce n-butanol" and submitted it on August 28th evening.

The following is our manuscript translated into English, which will be published in the first issue of the school newspaper this semester in late October:

School Public Speech
On August 25th, we organized an on-campus public speech in the amphitheatre, which mainly popularized our topic and our research. In total, about 300 students and teachers attended this public speech.

Our speech was conducted from several aspects, including the background of our topic, the research design, the research goal and our current results. The educational purpose of this lecture was to educate the public about n-butanol and Lactobacillus, which many people were not familiar with according to our survey. In addition, we also delivered the iGEM value and spirit to the attendees and encouraged them to join us as iGEMers as well.
School Clubs Cooperation
In order to further expand the scope of influence of our project, we also cooperated with the Bio-research Club and the Charity Club of the school to organize a school charity sale and give a public speech in the meantime.

This campus charity sale was named “Technology & Life” and attracted much attention. We set up several desks as activity spots where people could purchase our peripheral goods and communicate with us about our project. During the charity sale, our members also gave a public speech to introduce our topic and the biotechnology we utilized in the project.

This activity also received great support from the school. Our school WeChat Official Account published an article about this which has received 600 more reads so far. In the end, we made a profit of 1032 CNY which will be donated to the local nursing home. This activity served not only as a charity sale but also as a mini bio workshop, we could communicate with schoolmates directly to talk about our project and iGEM, and in the meantime raised funds for the charity to deliver the iGEM value and practice our responsibility to the society.
