Attributions

CAFA_China, initiated by the School of Experimental Arts of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and sponsored by Bluepha, is the first art school team in China to participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM). The CAFA_China team received a lot of help in participating in the whole season, and we are very grateful to all the people who helped us realize this project, whether it was providing experimental support or suggestions and discussions, which helped us greatly.


Team members

The completion of our project cannot be achieved without the enthusiasm and dedication of all team members. The following are the contributions of our team members.

Mengyao wang

Mengyao Wang is the Team leader of CAFA_China, leading the team to complete the whole project, Participate in the design of experiments and exhibition schemes, making the project Wiki. Organized VR painting workshop and drew VR image of Escherichia coli for the project.

Yuer Zhao

Executive Team leader of CAFA-China and Team leader of HP effectively promoted the completion of team projects, and actively organized HP activities to obtain external support. In the early stage of the project, I investigated a large number of experimental data and literature, promoted the completion of the experiment, and organized the report and data sorting of HP.

Yiwei Hu

As the vice captain of CAFA_China, I was responsible for the establishment and promotion of Synthetic Life Foundation, participated in the investigation and sorting of experimental literature, HP and publicity work, and drew and made handmade pop-up book models and samples. I was responsible and earnest in my work, and made very important contributions to the project.

Zhi Chen

Served as the leader of CAFA_China experimental group, investigated experimental data and literature in the early stage of the project, promoted experimental progress in the experimental stage, was responsible for digital modeling and CAD model drawing, and promoted offline exhibition.

Han Yu

Served as the leader of CAFA_China Publicity Art Group, responsible for the team's online publicity and distribution work, participated in pop-up book model making and illustration drawing, participated in the experimental group's early learning and investigation work, and assisted some foundation work.

Zishen Wang

Investigated experimental data and literature, took charge of team experiment and data sorting, and drew all data charts.

Haodong Liu

Designed logo for CAFA_China and ONCE, and was responsible for the design of all posters, data typesetting, model rendering and other visual work.

Zihang Qi

Responsible for the publicity and development of the team's official account, art, experiment, HP and foundation work, drawing and making handmade pop-up book models and samples.

Yuze Li

Responsible for data collation, translation and external publicity.

Jiayan Chen

Responsible for wiki uploading and web page making, participated in pop-up book early illustration drawing.

Primary Investigator:


Zhijie Qiu

He is vice president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Dean of the Experimental Art School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, member of the Academic Committee of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, professor, doctoral supervisor, director of the Chinese Artists Association, and deputy director of the Experimental Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association. He supported our activities in and out of school, and gave us a lecture on his creation based on the history of synthetic biology: The Synthetic Biology Map.

Haoqian Zhang

Co-founder and CEO of Bluepha. He received his bachelor's degree (biology) and PhD degree (Physics) from Peking University. He has published more than 20 research papers in top academic journals. International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition (iGEM), World finals champion guidance. Member of Synthetic Biology Professional Committee, Chinese Society of Bioengineering, Editorial board of Synthetic Biology. As the founder of Lanjing, he provided us with technical support and discussed with us about bioethics.

Cong Shen

Graduated from the School of Experimental Art, Central Academy of Fine Arts. In recent years, he has paid attention to the interdisciplinary cooperation field of art and synthetic biology. In 2022, he founded CAFA_China, the first art group participating in iGEM in China. Member of Youth Working Group of Synthetic Biology Branch, Chinese Society of BioEngineering; With NAND LAB director. As the executive leader of CAFA_China, he has given us important guidance in team building and organization, topic setting, external communication and other aspects.

Xinyu Liu

Head of Open Innovation at Bluepha. She graduated from the School of Life Sciences, Peking University. Years of iGEM gold medal and single award guidance, iGEM HP Committee member, iGEM EPIC China operation. For the advancement of our project to provide a lot of convenience.

BNSC_China (ONCE)

A synthetic biology commercial team is composed of both master and doctoral iGEMers. Members of the team have participated in iGEM more than ONCE, and of course they have won more than one Gold Medal. I would like to thank all members of ONCE for their technical support and guidance to CAFA_China.

Siyu Han

Han graduated from the College of Life Sciences, Beijing Normal University. The first author has published many academic papers in the professional field and has many years of biology teaching experience.During the project,she patiently gave us knowledge , experience and technical support. We are very lucky to have her help!

Yilin Hu

He is an associate professor in the Department of History of Science, School of Humanities, Tsinghua University. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Peking University. His research interests include phenomenological philosophy of technology, history of scientific thought, and history of technology. The core backbone of the National Key R&D Program "Research on the Ethics, Policy and Regulatory Framework of Synthetic Biology". We invited Mr. Hu to give many lectures, discussing the interaction between science and society, whether the public has the right to participate in science, and how science should be communicated.

Ying Wei

She is a curator, researcher and currently a researcher of science and technology art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.Her recent research and interests are in the field of science and technology art in the post-human context, including biological art, artificial intelligence and ecological art, Art history of science and technology and curatorial studies, etc. She also offers courses such as "Ecological Art" and "Biological Art" at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He communicated with us about our project proposal.

Baoyang Chen

He holds a master's degree from Columbia University and teaches at the School of Experimental Arts, Central Academy of Fine Arts. By studying the ontology of science and technology, we reflect on the relationship between science and technology, artists and the public, and in practice, we put the power of creation into the hands of algorithm and technology itself, so as to explore a state of true coexistence with technology. His research has been published in IJCAI, IEEE, ACM and other conferences and journals. He won the Porsche Young Artist Award and the Hyundai Blue Prize for curation.

BNSC_China (ONCE)

BNSC_China (ONCE) explained the rules of the competition for us, shared their experiences, discussed what the iGEM team at HP should do and how we should approach our goals by communicating with others and listening to their suggestions to solve practical problems we encountered in the project. ONCE gave us very good advice when designing the experimental line and provided us with component help. ONCE helped with technical and styling issues during the experiment.

Yuhan Bao

IGEM Human Practice Program Officer; Deputy Director of Youth Working Group of Synthetic Biology Branch, Chinese Society of BioEngineering; He is a PhD candidate at the School of Public Administration, Tsinghua University, Master of Environmental Science, Peking University, Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and Bachelor of Laws, Tsinghua University. Hanbin Deng

He is a professor at Hainan University, a theater actor and director. He is also a participant in the Human Behavior Research Project of Researcher Chengyu Li's team at the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences.He has taught or conducted research in Shanghai Theatre Academy, New York University, University of Warwick, Trinity University Dublin, Central Academy of Fine Arts and other institutions. We invited Professor Deng to suggest our phased approach and discuss solutions, as well as the possibility of presenting our project in a dramatic way.


Nan Huang

Huang Nan is a senior undergraduate at Peking University, majoring in general bioinformatics in College of Life Sciences. He has directed teams to participate in competitions for more than 4 years, led teams and designed projects and mathematical modeling. In addition to iGEM, he is also interested in computational neuroscience and various ways of applying deep learning methods and models in biological research. We thank him for his guidance and advice to our team.


Dan Xing

In the art + direction of science and technology research and curators, mixed media narrative and research of biological, ecological subject to day-to-day work of the narrative way,in an attempt to explore the diversity of the technology, as well as the art and science and technology creating the future the possibility of human crossover survival, co-prosperity, her from the curator Angle for us to provide the new way of thinking.


Pan Long

Born in 1991, he graduated from the Transmedia Department of China Academy of Art (Master's degree) in 2019. He lives and works in Yichun, China. Long Pan is interested in the traces of human behavior in living things, trying to find clues in the microscopic existence to find a broader connection between things. She often uses plants, fungi and other organisms as creative materials. In her recent creation, she used biological technologies such as "plant alchemy" and "fungal degradation" as creative methods, and introduced the practice methods of biological art to us in the TAP workshop.


Bowen Jin

He is a master curator in Institute of Contemporary Art and Social Thought of China Academy of Art (ICAST). He graduated from School of Mathematical Sciences of Beijing Normal University with a bachelor's degree. His research interests are in the fields of mathematical logic and philosophy of mathematics, French theory, art history, bio-art and design, etc.He is committed to developing a set of interdisciplinary/cross-media working methods and self-techniques through cross-field research and practice.


Yuning Chen

PhD student in Biodesign, University of Edinburgh, specialising in multi-species interface design and biodesign ethics. She has a multi-disciplinary background with dual masters in Innovative Design Engineering from South China Institute of Technology, the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. As a design researcher and innovation consultant, she specializes in using speculative design, future narratives, and interaction design to explore the innovative and entrepreneurial landscape of biological design in conjunction with multiple environmental challenges and social trends, as well as social issues such as a de-anthropocentric perspective, ecological ethics, and responsible innovation. She gave us a practical example of biological design.
