Our Project

Nitrogen-containing fertilisers are a major contributing factor to the increase of minerals and nutrients in the Thermaikos coast. This is called eutrophication and results in the rapid development of a larger number of microorganisms. These organisms, whether lichens, mosses, or fungi, often accumulate on the surface where they can reap the benefits of more direct sunlight as primary producers. Other bottom-dwelling autotrophs such as seaweed thus have a limited ability to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. While oxygen levels are high in the day, they can be very low at night, significantly disrupting marine animals, many of which suffocate.

One way to stop this phenomenon is to reduce the increased nutrient concentration in the first place. Our filter achieves this by converting nitrogen compounds that can be digested by these microorganisms into different forms. Enzymes are fixed between two filters attached to a 3D-printed filter skeleton. The skeleton consists of a cylinder dissected into two parts where the two filters are placed. The two filters can easily be removed to be cleaned or replaced.
