Safety
Safety is the most important thing we need to pay attention to during the whole experiments. We performed our experiments in Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIMM).
General safety
1. Wear white gown and disposable gloves when doing experiments.
2. Hand washing after finishing experiment.
3. Do not bring food and drinks into the laboratory.
4. Do not use the laboratory instruments without the permission of instructors.
5. Keep hands away from the face, eyes, and mouth when working with chemicals and microorganisms.
6. Dispose of experimental trash into special waste container.
7. Clean and tidy up the laboratory before leaving.
Material safety
In our experiment, materials are safety and not pathogenic including Taq, primer star MAX and Not I, E. coli (DH5α), and S. cerevisiae. Before we performed the bacteria experiment, the pipette tips and the culture medium have undergone the high temperature and pressure to eliminate the other bacterial contamination. Our experiments involved microorganism are performed in a clean bench to avoid contamination under the supervision of our instructors.
Application safety
The final product provided by the laboratory is a genetically engineered S. cerevisiae strain which express the 2'-FL. In the application, we put the S. cerevisiae into a fermentation tank with the sweet potato residue for fermentation. After fermentation, separation and purification, we can obtain 2'-fl, which after quality control we can ensure is safe and harmless, and then it is added to milk powder in a certain proportion and finally presented to the consumer.
Ethics
1. We do not use any animal or human genes in our experiment.
2. Any genetic modification technique in our product is for scientific research purposes.
