Children and elderly who live in Liyayuan Community in Shenzhen.
We came to Liyayuan community in Shenzhen on August 23rd. We explained our project through shadow puppetry in the community. Many children were fascinated by our puppetry. Members of our team taught the children to perform our project with shadow puppets.
During the competition, we often neglect our families and friends due to the busy work. During the summer vacation, we asked the team members to go home to spend the vacation, so that they could not only accompany their families, but also popularize the knowledge of synthetic biology to them. Our team members' hometowns are distributed in Heyuan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Qingyuan and some other cities in China. We came to these cities to make corresponding promotion, which has aroused the interest of many local people. Such projects in daily life can not only bring our projects to more friends, but also improve our relationship with friends and families.
Our team members come from all over the country, some are in towns and some are in cities. The education level varies from place to place. Some urban residents have little opportunity to learn synthetic biology. Therefore, we have built a bridge with the local people to popularize synthetic biology in the process of getting along with our families.
When we popularized science to our family and friends, we took full account of their biological basis. Some things we thought were very simple, such as DNA double helix structure, gene editing, etc., might be difficult for them to understand, so we used DNA models to help them understand.
We designed a simple and interesting synthetic biological Monopoly game. Participants, especially those non-biological students, can learn synthetic biology while enjoying the fun of the game.
We made a project brochures to introduce synthetic biology and project to people in our hometown. We planted the seeds of synthetic biology in their hearts and inspired their interest and enthusiasm to explore science.
We found that many people initially have some misconceptions about synthetic biology through this activity. For example, they thought it was an unreachable field when they heard the name. However, most of them became interested in synthetic biology and wanted to continue to learn about it after we used materials to popularize it.
Children aged 4 to 12.
We held the activity "Beauty Gluconacetobacter hansenii in Masks and Blocks" on July 27th because we wanted to bring synthetic biology into our lives. We set up a booth at 366 street to promote synthetic biology to the audience through communication, and therefore attracted many adults with children to participate in our event.
We educated them about synthetic biology through mask painting and building blocks to put together a genetic circuit. We taught them about the shape of bacteria and DNA in the process of mask painting. In the process of science education, we found that several children knew what DNA is and talked about it in detail and drew it on their masks. This enables the children to have images of living things in their minds and does not make the children feel so abstract and difficult to understand synthetic biology. During the process of putting together the genetic circuits with blocks, we taught the children about genetic circuits. It allows children to learn more about synthetic biology after we put the blocks together. It will deepen their understanding of synthetic biology when they build genetic circuits.
We attracted a lot of children to this activity. The educational method of drawing and building blocks allowed them to learn science tangibly. Every kid can learn about synthetic biology while playing. We believe that this "hands-on" approach is particularly effective. Therefore, we will continue to teach synthetic biology to a wider range of children through this method.

We let college students to understand our project more clearly through our brochures after we have carried out the science through Chinese shadow puppetry.
We used the brochures to bring school students into our project after the activity of played Chinese shadow puppetry. We used the brochure to communicate with the university students and to give them a deeper understanding of our project based on the science of shadow puppetry. We found that they were very interested in our project and they were happy to learn more about our project during the communication. They thought it was a very novel idea to combine synthetic biology with cosmetics. They wanted to understand more about the mysteries of our project.
We found that the brochures would give the public a better understanding of our project during this exchange. We have printed questions and answers about the project in the brochure. People can have a better understanding of synthetic biology and our project by answering questions.
