We ask every team to think deeply and creatively about whether their project is responsible and good for the world. Consider how the world affects your work and how your work affects the world.
At the beginning of the project, we need to learn about the background and procedures of tumor drug development. Therefore, our team invited Dr. Kuifeng Wang to have a talk. He is the founder and CEO of Chin Ho Pharma, a Ph.D. in pharmacology, and a front-runner on the road to a new drug attack. During this meeting, he gave us good inspiration for developing medicine.
"In the process of scientific exploration, experimental research has a great deal of uncertainty." Talking about his own study experience, from the ChiChinese Academy of Sciences to Zhejiang University to overseas experience, the biggest challenge of this is the uncertainty of the subject experimental research. Wang told the students that the subject experiment is only one link, and there will be many problems in choosing the subject, applying for the subject, and arguing for the subject, but it is important to believe that there are more solutions to the problems than problems. Because of such belief, Mr. Wang spent 9 years completing the professional theoretical reserve and scientific research accumulation, and successfully led the completion of a number of provincial and ministerial key projects in the field of medicine, and opened the path of entrepreneurship and established Qinhao Pharmaceutical (Suzhou) Co.
"From the experience of studying at the Chinese Academy of Sciences to the localized entrepreneurship in the innovative drug track, the quality of toughness is also essential." Looking back on his entrepreneurial journey, Wang, who started with nothing, did sales of instruments and equipment, reagents, and consumables to raise start-up capital. It turns out that when the opportunity came, the medical foundation and experience accumulated before became the core factor to win the first bucket of money. Mr. Wang said: No matter what industry you are engaged in in the future, the most important point is to sink your foundation, and it is also very important to find problems and solve them.
Mr. Wang shared his own personal words from his own schooling and entrepreneurial journey, combined with the cases around him. When students are still studying, they must precipitate knowledge, which will have a key role in the future. After the sharing, the students actively interacted with Mr. Wang and asked questions about the choice between industrialization and research and academic, the gap between domestic and international, and the frontier issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
Communication between the internal drive of the self and the external environment
Q: What was the opportunity for you to move from clinical medicine to drug research and entrepreneurship?
A: It also came from my experience as a doctor. When I was a doctor, I often encountered patients who had no medicine to cure them, and I was very helpless and frustrated, so I had the idea to engage in drug research and development to cure more patients. Secondly, the gap between China and Europe, and the United States in biomedicine has given me the internal drive to realize more self-worth.
Communication between industry and academia
Q: Your experience includes turning from clinical medicine into entrepreneurship. How should we as students choose between industrialization and academics?
A: Students are still in high school, before choosing a biomedical niche, the first element is the choice of a quality university; after entering graduate school or even higher, they decide on the niche, and at the same time be good at interdisciplinary collaboration, precise learning and expanding community.
Domestic and international biomedical exchanges
Q: It is believed online that China's research environment is not as good as developed countries abroad . Do you think the status quo will change in the next few years?
A: The answer to this is yes. As far as the biopharmaceutical ecosystem is concerned, the development of the whole system from the whole industry chain to commercialization is already very mature in Europe and the US, including the distribution system and the exit system, just like the work done in the iGEM challenge. But in China, there is still no perfect system, even though the gap is gradually narrowing. Therefore, we hope that in the future there will be more international talents to build the biomedical business together, and the future of medicine is yours.
At the end of our communication, Mr. Wang expressed his blessings and expectations to our team. We thanked him very much for his heartfelt sharing.
After getting the idea of developing an orally administered vaccine, our team tended to know about the consideration of the general public, especially their concerns about the safety issue of our potential vaccine. As a result, we made 4 questionnaires including normal and professional versions in both Chinese and English in order to accomplish a complete survey among all groups beforehand. Below is the content extracted from the questionnaires along with the results as well as further analysis.
According to the data, the percentage demonstrates that the general public holds an optimistic view toward cancer problems as well as treatment afterward. Also, newly- developed vaccines can be accepted and expected by most people, which tells us that the thoughts from people around us about one of the diseases that are hardest to be root is far more positive and willing. However, people must have some concerns about the treatment. And a nearly equal number of people are worried about the side effects, payments, and other considerations. When they are asked about the maximum payment they incline to pay for the vaccine, the higher the value of money, the greater percentage of people tend to pay for that. To conclude, though there are certain kinds of worries about brand-new ways to solve cancer, a large group of people intends to try this technology and pay for it, thanks to the fast-developing society, higher health awareness as well as stronger financial ability.
From the professional questionnaire, the value is essentially better than the data collected from the normal questionnaire regardless of the average understanding of cancer. There are a few more people who hold doubts. Compared to the traditional cancer vaccine, the people who think it more detrimental to use the oral vaccine weigh more. All in all, the data gives us a brief conclusion that few people fully support the oral vaccine due to the relatively low credibility of juniors and the completely new design. For the potential problems, half of the people chose "No", while the rest of them hold different views toward the probable problems in mainly 2 aspects, such as effects on patients' health and mechanical concerns for the uv light chip. Therefore, the second questionnaire lets the voice of more professional individuals be exposed, then we can listen to the advice and potential problems to better do research and experiment.
