Communication
To make our project gain more attention and attract more attention to the topic of type 2 diabetes, we organized variable activities for education and outreach to the general public for close communication. In the meantime, we also take the responsibility of promoting biosynthesis and iGEM to people through different channels with the help of several promotional and educational materials to spread our impact.
1. Brochures
Our brochures with three-fold pages
Brochures, besides posting online, could be printed out as a kind of paper media featured as beautiful and portable. Considering the features above, we designed some brochures to introduce our project and some core concepts such as diabetes and Glucokinase (GK).
The target audience was mainly from communities around us in China, we chose Chinese as the language of the brochures. We used hand-drawn cartoons and a Macaron color scheme to ensure a sophisticated appearance while delivering the content to the public, which gives people a sense of healing, conveying our humanistic care for diabetics.
We printed out our brochures and distributed them to our schoolmates
We have printed it and distributed it offline to connect our project to the public. Not only did we distribute brochures to passers during our fundraising but also organized the project promotion campaign by sharing them with our schoolmates inside the campus. During the communication with our schoolmates, we also explained how our project contributes to the drug development for type 2 diabetes and encouraged them to participate iGEM. Eventually, we found people interested in our brochures and consult us about some deep information including strategies to prevent diabetes and something about the GK.
2. Poster
Educational poster and its post on WeChat Official Account
Posters are a good way to promote culture and knowledge. Therefore, our team designed a poster to introduce our team to the public and promote our research topic, which is to study type-2 diabetes and its drug development in China. We posted the poster on our WeChat Official Account and also spread it to people around us for sharing knowledge about type-2 diabetes and our project solution.
In the poster, we briefly introduced diabetes and explained what is Glucokinase (GK), which is the object of our research and the mass may be unfamiliar with it. It is unnecessary for the public to acquire detailed knowledge from a poster but brief intros and key points to make an impression so as to encourage people to search more and pay attention to the topic. The more significant value of the poster we give to it is to attract the public and arise some discussion on the topic. Therefore, it will drive more people to follow us and follow our educational posts.
3.Science Popularization on Social Media Platforms
In the age of social media, people can acquire information everywhere and anytime by searching online and various social media platforms provide broad opportunities for their users to spread their voices and communicate with each other. In regards to our education campaign, we thought it will be an effective channel for us to outreach to the general public and promote our project and iGEM as well as educate them on our topics.
WeChat is the most popular social media platform in China, thus we created a WeChat Official Account by the name "iGEM DeDia" where we post educational articles and other updates, including our project introduction, fundraising promotion, educational video and poster posts, experimental progress et al.
Educational Video Post
Educational video received 127 reads, 10 likes and 3 forwards
To provide a comprehensive introduction of our project, our team members recorded a video to in detailed introduce our project background and project design with inserted subtitles to make it more convenient for watching.
Educational Article Post
There were three scientific educational articles earning us some heat and raising some interaction from followers.
1. 'iGEM De-Dia Team Popular Science | Diabetes'
Our first post 'iGEM De-Dia Team Popular Science | Diabetes'
In this article which actually is our first post on WeChat, we provided a comprehensive introduction to type 2 diabetes. This article could be divided into 4 parts, including the symptoms, pathogenic factors, test methods, and treatment. Based on our survey, we realized that even though many people heard of diabetes but they didn't possess relevant knowledge which might result in some misunderstanding or even bias. Therefore, we did some invetigation and wrote this article first to spread the knowledge about type 2 diabetes for public education and increase the correct awareness of diabetes. We think it matters more than promoting our team.
2. 'Team Introduction | Who we are and What we do'
Our second post 'Team Introduction | Who we are and What we do'
This article serves as the official greeting to our followers from our team. In this article, we briefly introduced our project goal. The main content we shared with the public is the project background which accounts for the most of page. We mainly illustrate diabetes as well as its types in a more academic way and shared the report about the situation and the growth of diabetes patients in China and around the world. After that we also described the blood sugar regulation mechanism and the core of our project, GK (GlucoKinase) to readers.
3. ‘Eating cookies can cure diabetes?!’
The article post ‘Eating cookies can cure diabetes?!’
In this article, we brought up with the term "Molecular Gastronom" to build a connection to introduce our main topic, Biosynthesis. Following that topic, we continued to introduce the basic logic of biosynthesis and described it like building legos. Then we mainly talked about the application of biosynthesis in agriculture and medical area where we echoed the article topic "cookie".
The communication and education on social media platforms have made us known to the general public. So far, the account has attracted 320 followers totally, which not only has popularized science and our topic but also attract many followers to focus on our team.
4. Online Lecture
We were giving a lecture online
Brochures and posters mainly functioned as a form of communication to make people pay attention to the topic of our project. But, deeper knowledge and information on type-2 diabetes and GK remained to introduce through a systematic lecture. To accomplish intensive education on the community around us, we invited our parents, some elderly people who were suffering from diabetes, schoolmates, and followers on WeChat to attend our online lecture.
We prepared some presentation slides to tell the public about what issue we are concerned about, how we deal with it and our future plan. At first, we shared our investigation about type 2 diabetes and GK as background information with our audiences, including the mechanism of GK. Then we drew our project goal which is to develop a new drug screening platform and find a new way to develop new drugs to contribute to the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
In the second part, we illustrated our experiment design and its biosynthesis engineering principles with many graphs for better understanding since many of our audiences don't possess relevant background knowledge before.
In the third part, we also frankly listed some challenges we were facing as an open conversation to the audiences to see how they think of our work.
In the last part, we displayed our marketing plan to the audience including how we will cooperate with some medical companies and academic research institutes to develop new drugs and make a contribution to the world.
As we said, many audiences who attended this lecture didn't possess relevant knowledge even though they probably heard of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we used less technical words for describing our work and more illustrations that may be more intuitive and detailed for better understanding. And after we finished the lecture, we also had a Q&A section to answer their questions which could make the lecture more engaging and enhance its effect of this educational lecture.
