The long story

Chantal Bohn's priceless role as our student team leader and head of operations encompassed many aspects of the project. She made sure all deadlines were met and our deliverables accomplished. She was also enthusiastically promoting iGEM and our project to the various new students as well as other people at our university. She was also part of the wetlab team and one of the main producers for our promo video. She was also one of our two signatories and looked after our bank account. Apart from being the sole presenter at the Swedish iGEM conference she has contributed to bringing in valuable lecturers and experts to help structure our project along the way.

Mandy Hobusch took on the challenge to be this year's Lab Team Leader. She co-designed most of our wet lab parts and ran the lab throughout the summer which also includes writing protocols, lab safety, lab instructions, acquisition of all lab materials, troubleshooting and data analysis. She has also been part of most of our collaborations with other iGEM teams and presented our experimental design in the promo video.

Leon Eisentraut was the other brain behind designing our gene fragments and creating lab strategies. He was also a very motivated force in early project design and contributed to creating models for our project. Apart from leading the lab team for some part of summer, he was also one of the signatories and was co-lead in making this year's budget plan. Last but not least, he presented our project idea in the promo video.

Harshal Kelkar was our head of Finances and co-lead in creating the budget plan. He managed our financial sponsors and helped acquiring new material sponsors for the project. He applied to many grants to acquire funds and along with Sebastian, created the project logo. Apart from being part of the wet lab team, he contributed to making the promotional video.

Deep Bhattacharya was our Human Practices co-manager and took head of social media and popped up interesting and informative updates and parts of our project. He was also part of the wet lab team and co-curated our promotional video. He brought our beautifully designed merchandise (t shirt + hoodie) to life. He also oversaw our collaborations and PR.

Nils Sandberg was our Wiki master and facilitator of our wiki team. He was in charge of constructing the whole wiki and uploading all our materials. He also learned JavaScript throughout the summer to get our wiki up and running.

Sebastian Andree was our Human Practices co-manager and took head of outreach projects. He worked to make our Syn-Bio dictionary a reality. He was responsible for managing the public outreach projects and reaching out to stakeholders and fellow iGEM teams. He was also part of the lab team, narrated the promotional video, took the team portraits, and assisted in creating the project logo.

Kevine Ramalingame was responsible for arranging public outreach events. He organised a bee farm visit and contributed to having collaborations with researchers. He was also part of the wetlab team.

Ayushi Pathak was our modelling head and along with Leon was responsible to making our models into equations and making them realistic with mythic computer languages (Python, R)

Wibke Maria Vellguth was our other Wiki master and co-headed the wiki team. She was also a lab team member and worked on designing certain wet lab parts and certain transformation protocols.

General Project support

Principal investigators

Dr. Johan Svensson Bonde

Researcher at the Department of Pure and Applied Biochemistry
He was our PI and without him iGEM Lund 2022 would not have been able to complete the project. He supported us throughout the project and helped us get permissions for various safety measures along with setting up our lab workspace.

Dr. Cedric Dicko

Associate Professor at the Department of Pure and Applied Biochemistry
Helped us tremendously with initial project design. Also helped in setting up equipment for Glyphosate detection and protocols for the following.

Advisors

Camilla Lane

Master Student of Molecular Biotechnology
She supervised us throughout our wet lab and helped us make crucial decisions while performing our experiments. She also helped with designing certain genes for our experiments.

External contributions

We received a lot of external support from various individuals and organizations which helped us realize our envisioned project.

Lab Support

Claes von Wachenfeldt

Senior lecturer at the Department of Biology, Lund University
Claes was our Bacillus subtilis consultant. Whenever we had questions during the design process, implementation of provided protocols or general troubleshooting during the experimental phase, we could always count on his expertise. He generously provided us with the two different plasmids as well as the host organism directly.

Jose Alfredo Zambrano Rodriguez

Researcher at ScanOats in Pure and Applied Biochemistry, Lund University
Alfredo has been functioning as a consultant and gave us valuable feedback during our design and wet lab phase.

Katja Bernfur

Researcher at Dept.Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Lund University
Katja has been specializing and working with Mass Spectrometry and helped us do Mass Spectrometry analysis of our protein bands to further analyze protein expression.

Human practices support

Dr. Laura James

Ecotoxicology Risk Assessor at Jealott's Hill International Research Centre
She helped us understand different aspects involved contributing to bee health and general behavior of bees within the hive.

Gunn Baustad

Beekeeper
Her farm “Beewild” gave us valuable insights into basic issues local beekeepers in Sweden were facing and provided a validation for the use of our product.

Konrad Thomas

Beekeeper
During interviews and visits to his bee farm, we gained valuable insights into bee life cycle and beehive structure in general.

Lena H

Beekeeper
She helped us understand bee keeping throughout the winters and which supplements beekeepers prefer using during those months along with some insight into different stressors affecting the bees.

Klaus Berend, Karin Nienstedt, Sofie Hofkens, Mark Williams, Nikolay Tzvetkov

Consultants from the European commission
We would like to thank the members from the European Commission in Health & Food Safety Unit for Biocides & Pesticides for giving us insights on active substance approval and renewal within the EU and also certain important regulations regarding use of GMO:s in the European Union.

Eva Forsgreen

Associate Professor at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
We would like to thank the members from the European Commission in Health & Food Safety Unit for Biocides & Pesticides for giving us insights on active substance approval and renewal within the EU and also certain important regulations regarding use of GMO:s in the European Union.

Dr. Steven Levine

Bayer Distinguished Fellow and Senior Regulatory Issues Manager, Bayer Crop Science, St Louis
We would like to thank Dr Levine for talking to us on two occasions and giving us deep insight into ecotoxicological aspects of pesticides and more about regulatory and risk assessment procedures for our possible probiotic.

Olle Bergman

Science communications consultant
In our workshop with Olle, he helped us as well as other iGEM teams by giving tips and suggestions regarding our Jamboree presentations and helped our presenters with important information necessary for public presentations.
