Collaborations

In this page you will find the collaborations our team did throughout the year.

#ASL in the Lab

Our team RUM-UPRM has been fully conscious of how important it is to address inclusivity around us. We are aware of the amount of challenges that several communities face today in our society. Therefore, we decided to target the deaf-mute community by creating a hashtag, #ASLintheLab; to see how other teams are inclusive using the American Sign Language (ASL) inside the work environment. We asked several iGEM teams to record a video in which one of their members says a phrase or a word using ASL. iGEM Teams Hamburg from Germany and Navarra_BG from Spain took the challenge and sent their videos showing a science word in ASL.

Alzheimer's Translation

In collaboration with iGEM Team CU_Egypt from Cairo University; who, in efforts to spread awareness on Alzheimer’s Disease, created a book titled “Memory." We were able to translate the book to Spanish in order to reach a wider audience. For the RUM-UPRM team, collaborating in such an important public health aspect is really meaningful, considering the fact that studies have found that approximately 6.6% of the Puerto Rican population aged 45 or older currently suffer subjective cognitive decline; statistics obtained from the Alzheimer’s Association.

World Environment Day- IISER Pune Team

Our team RUM-UPRM accepted the initiative of iGEM Team IISER Pune, to contribute in some way in order to make our Earth a better place to live in. On the occasion of World Environment Day our team member Andrea Acevedo decided to plant a tree, resembling the importance of taking care of nature. Our picture was sent to and further posted on social media by IISER Pune team.

Navarra_BG Plant Drawing

iGEM team Navarra_BG from Spain wanted to collaborate with worldwide teams by means of a drawing. Plant species Nicotiana benthamiana is the main protagonist of their project. Hence, they wanted to receive a drawing of N. benthamiana to further put it in a collage with all the plants they receive.

Beautiful Mistakes- iGEM Athens

We accepted the invitation to collaborate with iGEM Team Athens on their initiative of "Beautiful Mistakes". Their objective was to generate a composition of photographs with agar plates in which something unexpected grew. We sent a picture in which just a single colony grew in a negative control test.

SynBio Art Journal- iGEM ASU Team

ASU’s iGEM team reached out looking for any art piece that could showcase our team’s creativity with the purpose of creating an art journal based on synthetic biology. To support and be a part of the community’s input, our team created a poem based on our daily life in the lab as young scientists.

LATAM iGEM Meetup

We invited all Latin American iGEM teams to join us in our first LATAM Meetup. Among those, team Costa Rica & team Brazil were a few of those who accepted our invitation. The “iGEM LATAM MEETUP” hosted by our team RUM-UPRM will be a one day event that will serve as a space for every team to present their project and get feedback from professors before the Grand Jamboree. Due to atmospheric circumstances related to the direct impact of Hurricane Fiona to our island, we had to postpone the meetup to the 21’st of October.
