THE PROBLEM
Obesity and being overweight are common problems that can lead to many serious health consequences, such as cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, and depression.
During 1975 to 2016...
Today, more than 2 billion people are suffering from overweight and obesity worldwide.
Meanwhile, existing drug therapies such as Orlistat and Liraglutide has a series of side effects.
Therefore, we try to find out an alternative way to treat obesity.
Through research, we found that there is a relationship between obesity, microorganisms in the human intestine, and the intestine’s absorption.
In this way, we came up with our solution.
In our project, we aim to use synthetic biological ways to solve this problem: engineering E.coli Nissle 1917and planning to place it in patients’ intestines.
These E.coli have the ability to enhance the expressionof long-chain fatty acid transporter proteins and acyl-CoA synthetase.
These proteins can grab onto the fatty acids, preventing them from being absorbedby the intestine. Therefore, these E.coli can help people lose weight.
