Cheers! The NYCU-Taipei iGEM team has received the 2022 Team Impact Grant! 🎉🎉

Building on the work of synthetic biology, our team seeks to bring impact to the whole scientific community and take our project to the next level. We anticipate that our product could truly solve current challenges that microbiological researchers face, and provide a solution that could be easily applicable for users.

Our Challenge

  1. Using past methods to determine bacterial growth phase only allows rough monitoring.

  2. Researchers need to continuously measure OD to determine how bacteria are growing, but constantly taking bacteria out of the incubator may introduce variables to experiments.

Our Solution

Using fluorescent growth status indicators, our engineered bacteria can display different colors at different growth stages, providing real-time detection of bacterial growth.

Applications of Our Project

Our project benefits potential users in basic laboratory settings and those in the industrial field. Mass production of recombinant proteins and pharmaceuticals require accurate detection of certain microbial status in order to enhance product yield and quality. By using E. color, our automated real-time monitoring device, users can save time and manpower. Moreover, this method requires low cost and low technical threshold, which is widely available for the entire scientific community. Now, we prove that remote monitoring of bacterial status is possible with the use of fluorescence, the "gift from nature".
