iGEM Map

What is iGEM MAP?

In order to promote the importance of Synthetic Biology and where these experiments are taking place, NTHU_Taiwan decided to create a map for iGEMer's! During this collaboration, we will use the character that iGEM teams designed to mark their locations and promote their projects.

Fig 1. The screen shot of iGEM Map!

How to Use the iGEM MAP?

Step 1

When loading is complete, you will see Staph standing at National Tsing Hua University. Zoom out to collect more teams on the map. In a large-scale scene, try to zoom in to get the accurate location of each team.

Step 2

Grab the map to move the field of view. Try to click on the mascot to see what the cute creatures want to tell and check out the team's fan pages by links beside their mascot introduction.

Step 3

Try to change the background map theme by clicking the layer controller on the top right corner

Step 4

Try to hide/show the mascots in different regions by clicking the layer controller on the top right corner

Seems all grasp the guide, now, please follow us to explore the new scientific world.

Why is iGEM MAP?

As stated above, the reason we wanted to create the iGEM Map is that iGEM is an open community where all students and scientists have a chance to bring their dream or imagination into reality. This year, NTHU_Taiwan wants to connect every team's dream and make everyone see how young people around the world make efforts to help the world.

Who is on the iGEM MAP?

We collected around 31 teams' projects and their mascot to build a fantastic map that is not only an embedded google map but is a dream library that can encourage people around the world that everyone can do something like us rather than just being a dreamer. Thanks for all participants’ assistance in this project so much!

What is the Value of the iGEM MAP?

iGEM MAP is a fantastic collaborative project initiated by NTHU_Taiwan that integrated 31 iGEM teams information matching platform, allowing users to view the projects of 30 iGEM teams in various countries and expand users’ international vision.

Click on the logo to clearly see the team introduction, and attach the team's social platform and contact information next to the introduction. The simple, convenient, time-saving and efficient operation interface of iGEM MAP makes it easy for all generations to get started.

Last but not least, the lovely character design is full of the creativity of the participants, making the whole map full of beauty and knowledge.

ARS Conference

Abstract

At the end of June, we participated in ARS 2022 Conference (The 13th AFOB Regional Symposium, 2022), in which most iGEM teams in Asia had engaged. The most interesting part is the Q&A session. The organizer set up many bulletin boards, and all the participants can post their questions and answers on them. In that way, every team can know each others' replication, which is very convenient.

We received many interesting ideas from many teams which truly assist us to improve our project. The most meaningful thing is that we realize how to present in full English.

CUHK-Hong Ko

CUHK-Hong Ko held the iGEM team for the first time this year. Their project is about tumor target and strengthening our immune system to fight against cancer. We had our first online meeting on July 29th. Through this online meetup, we not only exchange both projects’ ideas but also shared some information related to the iGEM competition and suggestions for raising funds with them.

UCPH iGEM 2022

UCPH iGEM 2022 is a team from Denmark. We had our online meetup on July 27th. In the beginning, we introduce both countries and had a wonderful short chat. Later on, we presented the project respectively. They synthesized recombinant biodegradable biomaterials to replace nylon fishing nets. We introduced the traditional fishing methods in Taiwan and also discussed the importance of sustainable fishing methods and equipment.

NYCU_Formosa

NYCU_Formosa discovered a biomaterial Ubx and combined it with another functional peptide, one of the peptides is LL37. Besides, the team from NYCU_Formosa last year had the experience of using AMP. Therefore, we exchanged much information about AMP and its antibacterial effect. Most importantly, we decided to establish a partnership because their project is highly similar to ours. In the end, we invited them to join our podcast project to share their fantastic idea with more people.

NCHU_Taichung

NCHU shared their idea about using synthetic biology to help diabetic patients‘ wounds heal rapidly. We also presented our topic and provided them with some advice about raising funds. At the end of our meetup, we exchanged the operation methods of both human practice groups. We also invited them to join our podcast project in order to share their fantastic idea with more people.

In-Person Meetups

Taiwan iGEM Meet

We joined an academic conference held by Taiwan Synbio Alliance at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. During Taiwan iGEM Meet our team derived many benefits as below because all the iGEM teams in Taiwan showcased their projects and socialized. Most importantly, we received much feedback from the NCKU_Tainan’s Alumni, which help us modify our topic and improved our English speaking skills a lot.

Discussion

Fig 9. Presentation in the conference

  1. Experiment
The initial goal of our team was to treat impetigo with a novel microneedle at that time, and a NCKU_Tainan alumni, as well as a doctor, suggested that we should classify the advantages of the microneedle platform because she believed that treating impetigo with antibiotics would be sufficient from a clinical point of view. So, we decided to develop a microneedle platform to carry multiple drugs, in order to cure other common diseases.
  2. Model
In our first model, we ignored the degradation rate of antimicrobial peptides, which made our model unrealistic. During Taiwan iGEM Meet, we received suggestions from many seniors and other iGEM teams. After discussion, we decided to refer to the degradation rates on the research papers to make our model more credible.
  3. Human Practice
The Taiwan iGEM Meet was a grand seminar for Human Practice groups because we can exchange ideas with iGEMers and invite each other to participate in the Human Practice collaboration. Take our team as an example, we were invited to join CSMU_Taiwan’s singing project, etc.

NYCU_Formosa

In April, we shared some experimental methods as well as recommended the plasmid we use with NYCU_Formosa. Furthermore, NYCU_Formosa mentioned that they wanted to make a light‑cured 3D printing to applicate their protein by connecting the protein Ubx, and our wet lab member, who majors in the material science department, has a lot of relevant experience and provided many suggestions to NYCU_Formosa. Moreover, we mentioned that we are a pleasure to take the SEM image for NYCU_Formosa, hoping that can make their experiments more complete and credible.

Picture Book Translation

Motivation

In order to reach our accomplishment, we published a picture book and collaborated with iGEM teams around the world to translate our book into their native languages.

BioArt_TheThirdSpace - BioArtist lecture & Online exhibition

NYCU_Formosa proposes a BioArt project this year. There is a famous BioArtLab in our university, and the students have published many beautiful artworks and successfully conveyed the idea of BioArt to the public. Therefore, we invited the students from NTHU BioArtLab-Zi Yan, Lin, and Yun Zheng, Yang in our university to give a brief introduction to BioArt, and present their outstanding artwork-Across The Street. Moreover, we participated in the online BioArt exhibition held by NYCU_Formosa to boost science communication together.

NCHU_Taichung-short video

NCHU_Taichung created a YouTube channel that integrated the short project introduction video of iGEM teams in Taiwan. Thanks to this channel, we have not only promoted our project to others but also realized other iGEM Teams’ ideas.

NETLANTIS UCPH iGEM 2022

NETLANTIS UCPH iGEM Team aimed to invent environmentally friendly biomaterials which are related to the ocean. Therefore, UCPH iGEM came to us because Taiwan is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, they invited us to take a short film by the sea saying "Inspiring" in Mandarin.

CSMU_Taiwan

CSMU_Taiwan wrote a song to convey the idea of synthetic biology and invited iGEMers to chorus. Honestly, the melody of the Theme Song is beautiful and delightful, so we are so glad to sing together. If you are interested in listening to this song, please click the image below.

USAFA iGEM

USAFA iGEM had invited us to create a character and illustrations related to our project because they want to make a picture book and help iGEM teams to promote their projects, which include 12 teams from 7 countries around the world.
