Safety

Every member in LZU-HS-China-A has learned basic laboratory rules. We put our security in first place during the experiment. We check and clean our equipment as a part of our daily schedule. Our team follows the guidelines of academic equipment usage and the biological materials (DH5αetc.) we use are for safety level 1. Furthermore, the laboratory we do our experiment is also safety level 1. We also have teachers who assist us during the whole experiment process.

Although the experimental materials we use are not very harmful, for the safety and health of the experimenter and the public, all the students in our team should learn about experimental safety matters.

Lab Safety

Basic laboratory operation specifications

1.Eating, sleeping, running, jumping, and slapstick are prohibited in the laboratory

2.Please wear a lab coat and mask when entering the laboratory. Wear gloves before starting the experiment. Don't wear long skirts and slippers. Throw used gloves into the designated trash bin before leaving the lab.

3.Wear gloves correctly and check for breakage before wearing. After the experiment, remove the gloves correctly to ensure that the contaminated surface of the gloves does not come into contact with the skin and the outside world.

4.Lab coats and gloves are not allowed in the office. Wearing gloves and hazing office computers and other office supplies are not allowed.

5.Don't taste or sniff chemicals.

6.Dispose of lab waste properly.

7.Know what to do with lab accidents.

8.Experimental garbage and waste liquid should be classified and disposed of with household garbage. According to the rules of different laboratories, they should be put into different garbage cans and waste liquid barrels for disposal without chemical hazards.

9.After the experiment, the power supply should be cut off in time, and the used instruments and equipment should be restored to their original positions.

Laboratory Safety Precautions - Biological aspects

1.Escherichia coli DH5alpha does not have any toxicity, immediately after contact with skin or eyes, rinse with water, no need for protection.

COVID-19 Prevention Measures and Control

1)Each of the team members has to offer a picture of their health green code plus their travel record at the first day they enter the lab.

2)If someone leaves Beijing during the experiment period, he/she needs to offer a new picture of his/her health green record plus travel record when he/she returns to Beijing.

3)Every team member prepares masks and wears them in and out the lab.

4)Team members use medical alcohol to clean their belongings and hands.

5)As a daily routine, each of the team members needs to submit a 24h negative COVID-19 test report to access the laboratory.

Method/ Material Risk (what could happen) Protection (how to protect yourself and others)
Alcohol burner Cause fire hazard By placing it in alcohol free environment to pretend airflow blow in alcohol burner; Wiping hands after using alcohol spray; Covering the lid twice; The volume of alcohol in alcohol burner cannot exceed two thirds.
Fluorescent protein Harm human’s bodies by changing DNA to cause cancer By wearing two-layer of gloves to pretend fluorescent protein contacts to skin.
Centrifugal machine Unable to implement successfully By guaranteeing the weight of centrifugal tube equal before operating centrifugal machine and placing it symmetrical; Liquid in centrifugal tube cannot exceed two thirds, prevent liquid divulge and corrode centrifuge head.
Electrophoresis Unable to implement successfully By running under 220 voltages; Closing electrophoresis before take glue.
Ethidium bromide Poisonous to human By wearing two-layer of glove and mask.
