Algal Bloom

Algal bloom refers to a phenomenon in which the color of water changes into green due to the outbreak of phytoplankton such as cyanobacteria. Recently, due to the abnormal climate such as rising water temperature, algal bloom is getting worse. This generates odors, destroys aquatic ecosystems and even produces toxic substances. Green algae produce a toxic substance, microcystin. When river water is used as agricultural water or when river water flows into agricultural water, microcystin of algae becomes a problem. The possibility that microcystin may accumulate in crops is raising people's anxiety. In fact, microcystin was found in tap water. The cause of this phenomenon is mainly the excessive use of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Surplus nitrogen and phosphorus from excess fertilizers flow into rivers through agricultural waterways, which found to be the main culprit causing eutrophication, the cause of algal bloom.

Our solution

we aim to remove the causative material from agricultural waterways before they flow into rivers. so we make our brand new ABC filter. ABC filter is divided into anaerobic parts using anammox to remove nitrogen and aerobic parts that generate hydrogen peroxide to remove green algae. It makes bio-film to control both the causative substances and the problematic phenomenon. Our main idea came from the cell free system. CFS is an in vitro tool that can reduce complex interactions between the whole cell so that only the target reaction can occur.

Overview

We apply this idea in two steps: enzyme production and filter production. First, enzyme production with CFS allows us to produce the target enzyme quickly and economically. Second, by applying CFS to filter production, microorganisms may not be used directly, which prevents side effects that may arise from interacting with other native organisms in the ecosystem. Putting our solution into practice, we anticipate solving the world’s algal bloom problem and providing cleaner and safer drinking and agricultural water. If our solution is put into practice, we will be able to contribute to solving the world’s algal bloom problem and providing cleaner and safer drinking and(or) agricultural water.
