About Us

ONCE China(registered as BNSC_China) is a team composed of experienced iGEM alumni. The co-founders of this team believe in the power of iGEMers. We would like to show iGEMers how can they use this power to change the world, to promote the application of synbio technologies in the real world.

And this is why we call our team "ONCE China". We were once iGEMers, but this time our project is far more than an iGEM project. Aiming at enabling technologies in the synbio industry of China, we built a time-saving platform for synbio product development. Based on this platform, we believe our ability to fit the fast-changing market gives us an edge in commercialization.

Vibrio
Natriegens

Vibrio natriegens is a novel non-model organism that grows much faster than traditional chassis like E.coli. And its space-time production rate for some products is much higher than traditional chassis. Based on V.nat, we believe the efficiency of synbio product development will be largely accelerated. With fast iteration and potentially high yield, our business model will be more competitive.

Products

Beyond shortened R&D period, it is important to choose a proper product that brings profit to a company. Based on Boston Consulting Group(BSG)'s prediciton of future synbio industry, we believe cosmetics and food are the best choices at this time and looked into the cosmetic and food industry in China

First product: Bisabolol

By now, we have developed our first synbio product, (-)-α-bisabolol, which is a newly arisen additive in cosmetics. The traditional supply of (-)-α-bisabolol is from Candeia trees, which means decades of breeding and forest felling.

Follow Up: Mongroside V

After our success on (-)-α-bisabolol, we are now experienced on V.nat genetic manipulation and commercializing of a synbio product. Based on previous research on metabolic engineering of V.nat and our prediction of China's food market, our next product will be mongroside V, a sugar substitute with unique characteristics.
