Reinventing Yeasts
as Factories for Monoterpenoids

To establish a powerful pathway for the efficient production of monoterpenoid precursors, we metabolically engineered both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Yarrowia lipolytica. We cloned a total of 108 different constructs and successfully introduced 16 different genes into our yeast strains.

Yeasts’ Best Friend: BREES

The precursors are easily and efficiently converted into a variety of monoterpenoids by our cell-free, electrically-driven system: BREES – short for BioReactor for Enzymatic ElectroSynthesis

The Impact of Monoterpenoids
– Exemplified by Verbenone

To display the functionality of MonChassis we produced the monoterpenoid verbenone. This repellent pheromone is capable of containing infestations of forests by the bark beetle, a rapidly expanding threat to our woodland ecosystems.
