Bessie

Elizabeth Bilsland

I am a solo mum of 3 humans, 2 dogs, 5 cats, and many foster kittens, an agronomic engineer (ESALQ/USP), with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (U. of Göteborg) and a postdoc in Biochemistry (U. of Cambridge). Passionate about Synbio, I established the Synthetic Biology lab at Unicamp in 2016 and implemented the first 2 courses in Synbio at the university. I enjoy teaching, and love lab work, but nothing beats a good chat and a (large) cup of tea!

Team

Larissa

Larissa Monteiro, 24

Hello, I'm Larissa, biologist and now I'm a master's student at the Laboratory of Synthetic Biology at UNICAMP.

Brena

Brena Menezes, 28

Hi, I'm Brena and I was born in Igarapé-Açu, a town in the middle of the Brazilian Amazon. Nowadays I am doing my masters in Organic Chemistry and I feel thrilled to work with synthetic biology techniques that could improve people's life quality. I see iGEM as an opportunity to encourage us in trying to change the world.

Michele

Michele Petineli, 23

People also call me Toró, like heavy rain in portuguese . I'm from a small city in the São Paulo state and currently pursuing my BCs in biological sciences at Unicamp. I love to cook, enjoy nature, and poop jokes. I'm a vegan hoping that one day "the world will be as one".

João

João Eduardo Levandoski, 25

Hi, I'm João Eduardo Levandoski. I was born in a tiny city in Paraná. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering, and I’m currently in the first semester of my master's in Synthetic Biology. I work in different project areas, within wet lab activities, such as bioreactor designs, and cellulose and glucose quantification strategies. Still, my main responsibilities rely on math and metabolic models

Gabriel

Gabriel Pires, 24

Hi, I’m Gabriel, a master's student in plant science. I’m also a computer technician and joined the team to help with the WIKI development (but for one day or two I have also helped in the lab and with some discussions).

Eduardo

Eduardo Menoti, 21

Hi! I’m Eduardo Menoti, BSc student in biological sciences at Unicamp. I like cinema, studying, taking long showers, and procrastinating in my non-free time.

Ninon

Ninon Barrios, 29

Hi! I am Ninon. I’m from Bolivia where I studied biochemistry, but now I am doing my master's degree in molecular and functional biology at Unicamp, Brazil. I got to know the iGEM competition from my early graduation, and dreamed of the idea of Bolivia competing, so that last year I was part of the first Bolivian team, as a tutor.

Brenda

Brenda Souza, 24

Hi, I’m Brenda, I am an undergraduate in Biology at Unicamp and I do research in the genetic engineering field. When I had the opportunity to be part of the iGEM group at Unicamp, I was really excited, because it was a good opportunity to work with synthetic biology. I really enjoy drawing, going out with my friends, and reading books in my free time.

Christiane

Christiane Campos

Hi! My name is Christiane, I’m a trained Biologist currently doing my master's degree in Genetics. I’m from the Northeast region of Brazil, but I moved to São Paulo this year. I see iGEM as an opportunity jn getting in touch to a different area and for contacting different people. I like to read, listen to music and dedicate myself to crochet.

Katherine

Katherine B. Marchesan, 15

Hi! My name is Katherine and I was born in the University of Cambridge (literally). I moved to Brazil 7 years ago and am now 15 years old and in my first year of technical high-school studying informatics at Instituto Federal de São Paulo. In my free time, I enjoy drawing, planting, and fostering kittens.

Marina

Marina Maximo, 22

Hi! My name is Marina, I am a 22-year-old student at Unicamp, very close to becoming a Bachelor in Chemistry. In our project, I was mainly involved with sponsorships search, collaborations and glucose quantification. Except for the latter, which is part of my study domain, it was nice to put on other skills that I was not very familiar with.

Yūgo

Yūgo

A late addition to the team, Yūgo designed and developed part of the team's wiki, and also developed the bacterial cellulose game intended for science communication. Being the only Computer Engineer on the team, he is also responsible for developing tools intended not only for communication, but also modeling, data analysis and experiment planning.

Shaker

Shaker, 6

I'm the hardest working member.

Advisor

Lucas

Lucas Miguel

Hello. My name is Lucas Miguel and I am a researcher in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Unicamp. I work mainly with multi-omics data integration and development of data analysis methods. Currently, my research project is the improvement of xylose-consuming yeasts for the production of 2G ethanol by omics data integration with machine learning methods.

Team Bonding

From the very beginning, the UNICAMP’s iGEM team intended to honor the name of the university where it takes place. The University of Campinas is unique for its diverse and specialized campi, and gathering this diversity of students and ideas. One of our biggest concerns, as the activities were divided between team members , was to make sure all members were always aligned with everything that was happening with the project, even if it wasn’t related to their area. In this way, everyone contributed with their skills while also learning from each other.
