Collaborations

Collaborations with other iGEM teams

Our team had the privilege of collaborating with other iGEM teams from other parts of the globe on various projects. Through the different collaborations, our team had the opportunity to gain insight and learn about different projects. Despite competing, we learned the value of collaboration and helping each other in the spirit of collaboration. We participated in collaborations that reflected our values as a team and reflected our project on different levels.

“Future of space exploration with iGEM 2022 projects”

Both of our teams are working on projects related to space. Therefore, we decided to collaborate on a poster for a project related to space by iGEM teams 2022: “Future of space exploration with iGEM 2022 projects”. You can find the poster down below.

“iGEMERS In Space”

We later came to collaborate on an online meetup “iGEMERS In Space”, with team SJTU-BIOX-SHANGHAI , hosted by Team Estonia TUIT . During the online meetup. Each team presented their project and later discussed the problems they encountered when adapting our projects to space conditions. We discussed and proposed possible solutions and ways to approach our problems. You can find a summary of the discussion during the online meet-up down below.

We reached out to Team Calgary and iGEM UniCamp Brazil for a series of meetups as our teams were working on similar projects. All teams are working with cellulose-producing bacteria, with team Calgary working with the same strain of bacteria, K. xylinus. The meeting aimed to present our project and discuss difficulties in our projects, especially regarding working with cellulose-producing bacteria and discuss possible solutions.

Human practices collaborations

From the very beginning, our team knew the importance of communication. As our team consists of students from different disciplines and diverse backgrounds in terms of age, culture, and ethnicity that came together due to our passion for science and innovation. Therefore, it was important to us from the very beginning that our effort and collaborations reflected our values. Communicating science is just as important as doing science, therefore disseminating and spreading awareness of problems, projects and science are of utmost significance. Translation builds bridges between different cultures and is an effective means to overcome the language barrier and generate inclusivity. For that reason, our team joined collaborations that reflected our values.

We joined the core group of infographic translation with iGEM Teams GEMS Taiwan, Korea HS, and Thailand RIS which translated and disseminated iGEM infographics into each of our respective languages. We found that this collaboration was important as it communicated and disseminated science and ideas from different teams across the globe, thus giving a platform and bringing awareness to the problems and ideas to solve the problem. You can find more about the collaboration under our education and communication page.

University of Lausanne: TheTranscriptome.com

TheTranscriptome.com

We joined hands with iGEM team UNIL 2022 to translate articles into Norwegian on the blog The transcriptome. We found this collaboration important as the blog provides knowledge related to topics related to synthetic biology and popular science. The articles are fun to read, therefore we happily took part in the collab as it both reflected our values. You can find the collaboration under our education and communication page.

ITESO Guadalajara: Podcast about Space and iGEM

We participated in a podcast about our work and experiences with iGEM that Team ITESO distributed through their Spotify account SYN Sentido episode and YouTube channel in Mexico.

You can find the episode in Spotify her

For their project, Building BerryVax, we were able to help them validate their genetic circuit by reading literature about it and applying it to their specific needs. To know more about their Dry and Wet Lab work, visit their wiki page: https://2022.igem.wiki/iteso-guadalajara/implementation

State University of Campinas: From Collaboration to Partnership

Beyond these collaborations, we also have extensive multiple collaborations with iGEM team UniCAMP from the University of Campinas in Brazil, which resulted in a partnership that can be seen on our partnership page.
