Our contribution to the iGEM community includes a safety kit that every laboratory should use to create a safe environment for all involved and we have worked with parts that explain the understanding of working with inteins. In addition, our team has made it our mission to share a lot of knowledge about synthetic biology with many different people.
Our safety kit is a illustrated list of important rules for S1 laboratories. To make the rules easy and quick to understand and always present in the labs, we have created two well-organised pages that can be hung up in the labs. Working safely should be a top priority for all iGEM teams and with these simple rules many mishaps or accidents can be prevented. Our team created these pages after our safety briefing, read more about it on the safety page. At the beginning of our iGEM time, our labs were not yet S1 labs, so it was even more important that the rules in the S1 labs were clear. Our safety kit helped a lot with this
The lab safety kit can be found on our Education page.
Our iGEM team has made it their mission to inform especially young people about the great diversity of synthetic biology. Using social media as the main source of information was particularly important, as we were using a medium that is used by young people on a daily basis. We wanted to report not only about biological methods or processes, as with the hashtags #TechniqueThursday and #ScienceSaturday, but also through various memes to arouse initial interest. But also critical topics with the help of #IchbinHanna were explained. More information about our social media strategy on our social media page.
But it is not only on social media that we have communicated science to young people. We gave a presentation on synthetic biology at a school. More information about this on our Education page.
Our parts BBa_K1484003 and BBa_K1484004 are parts that deal with inteins. Here we not only provide the part itself, but also give helpful information on what internals actually are, how they work and how they can be used. We have also explained exactly how we use the inteins in our self-amplifying signal for amplification. So in addition to our part and how it works, we also give the user useful knowledge on how else to use inteins. In addition, there are some papers where you can read more about the intein and which are also the basis for our knowledge.
