Overview

Our team soon realized that iGEM is more than just a competition. During our journey, we had the chance to collaborate with many teams and learn the value of teamwork. We were quite excited to interact with other teams and share our ideas and thoughts regarding SynBio.

Multilingual Online Synbio Dictionary
iGEM Vilnius, iGEM Aachen, iGEM UPNA, iGEM UBarcelona, iGEM Bettencourt

A dictionary is a list of words with their definitions organized alphabetically. It serves as a reference and provides information on words, which are a vital part of human communication. Since we are living in a digital era and since we conclude that the Greek population is unfamiliar with the scientific discipline of Synthetic Biology, our team decided to create an online Greek Dictionary of Synthetic Biology Terms. In our effort to achieve the best accessibility in science, we took it one step further and asked our fellow iGEM teams to provide us with definitions translated in the most spoken languages worldwide! Collaboration means working together to achieve the same goal, which in our situation aimed to develop a simple and useful tool of fundamental synthetic biology terms.

The teams iGEM Vilnius, iGEM Aachen, iGEM UPNA, iGEM UBarcelona, iGEM Bettencourt helped us with that and participated in our project by translating the guide into their languages.

Phototroph Community
UBCO iGEM & ASU iGEM

We collaborated with several iGEM teams interested in Phototrophs Synthetic Biology, to provide the community with a revised version of the 2021 Phototroph Handbook. We authored two chapters, one in synthetic regulatory circuits for plants and one in the Golden Braid 2.0 Phytobrick assembly method. We also took part in the Phototroph Conference, where we presented our project and received valuable feedback from the Phototroph Community members. We are deeply thankful to teams iGEM ASU and iGEM UBCO for organizing the events. Below, you can find the chapters and the badges given to us by the organizers, as a proof of participation.

Virtual Symposium on Bioethics and Synthetic Biology
iGEM Manchester, iGEM HKU, iGEM Bath

It is a fact that the usage of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) brings about many complications concerning their application and the regulations around them. After several discussions with iGEM Manchester, iGEM HKU, and iGEM Bath, we all agreed to host an open-access virtual conference on bioethics and synthetic biology in order to raise awareness on these concerns and learn more about the implementation of our synthetic biology projects. In the workshop, all teams had the chance to present their ideas, while experts in bioethics were invited to discuss topics linked to synthetic biology. Our intention was to have a thorough discussion and inform the public on GMO regulation. We're glad we worked together with these teams for a mutual goal!

Co-LAB
iGEM Thessaloniki & iGEM Athens

This year we were excited to participate in the 2022 InterLab study organized by the iGEM Interlab Committee. However, we lacked the black plates with transparent bottoms required for the plate reader in order to read the absorbance and the fluorescence simultaneously. For that reason, we approached the iGEM Thessaloniki team and the iGEM Athens team and requested these plates. From our side, we helped iGEM Thessaloniki by sending them DH5α competent cells so they could conduct their experiments. We also assisted iGEM Athens by supplying them with black plates when we had them in stock so that their project laboratory work could continue.

Apta-lition
iGEM IISER Tirupati

Our team joined the “APTA-LITION”, a virtual mini-symposium hosted by iGEM IISER Tirupati. During the event we got close with other iGEM teams working on aptamers, discussed our ideas, and interacted with the guest speakers. The first day involved inspiring speeches by several experts on the field, followed by a panel discussion on the next day. Through this, we gained a lot of knowledge and we developed our project. For that reason, we are grateful to the iGEM IISER Tirupati Team for their initiative and great teamwork in this scientific field.

Accessibility in Science
UBC team

On Wednesday, August 17th our team attended the ‘International Accessibility to Synthetic Biology Innovations' panel organized by UBC iGEM. It was an interactive panel discussion focusing on international accessibility to synthetic biology opportunities in terms of legal barriers, resources, and infrastructural support. We had enlightening and productive discussions with speakers from business and academia from several continents, including North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. As participants in this event, we gained valuable knowledge about how to improve the synthetic biology ecosystem and infrastructure in our own communities!

Spreading SynBio to Hellenic Medical Students
iGEM Athens, iGEM Thessaloniki, iGEM Patras

On May 14, the 28th Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Athens. Our team joined forces with iGEM Athens and iGEM Thessaloniki and iGEM Patras communicating Synthetic Biology principles to medical students. To facilitate communication and collaboration, our team created a discord server with all Greek iGEM teams, as well as made a joint poster to advertise the event on social media.

Aegean Greek iGEM Meetup
iGEM Patras, iGEM Athens, iGEM Thessaloniki, iGEM Patras Med, iGEM UP Hellas, iGEM Crete

Prior to the Aegean Meeting, an online event named “Get to know us better!” was held, where we had the chance to meet for the first time other Greek iGEM teams and share our projects, our thoughts, and experiences from the competition.

On July 10, 11 and 12, the time for the in-person meeting arrived and our team traveled all the way to Patras city to attend the Aegean Meet up organized by iGEM Patras. We had the opportunity to communicate further with the other Greek iGEM teams while at the same time to participate in various educational activities. In order to educate the audience on eutrophication and plant synthetic biology, our team presented this year’s project. From the discussion with the teams that followed, important implications for our project arose. Inspiring speeches from professionals in the areas of Bioethics, Biosafety, and Entrepreneurship were also featured in the program, along with engaging activities that helped us get to know other iGEMers from Greece.

Moments:

Agricultural practices
iGEM Patras

Our team conducted a webinar for farmers on sustainable agricultural methods on September 13. During this webinar, we educated farmers about eutrophication, an anthropogenic phenomenon mostly attributable to agricultural practices, and welcomed iGEM Patras to discuss precision agriculture, an emerging solution to the problem, and present their project. We were glad that we were able to effectively conduct this educational webinar and collaborate with iGEM Patras to achieve mutual goals.

Challenges
World Enviroment Day
iGEM IISER Pune Team

Since we aim to combat a serious environmental phenomenon, it would be a remiss not to embrace the World Environment Day in order to educate the public about the global ecological crisis and the ways to mitigate it. For that reason, our team took part in the “Only one earth” challenge organized by iGEM IISER Pune Team which required teams to perform an environmental act. By planting a tree at our university campus, we aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the natural environment and to motivate the general public through social media to inspire people into taking environmental action. We were excited to be part of the effort to make the Earth a better place to live!

International DNA Day
iGEM Patras Med

For the celebration of the International DNA day, on 25th of April, iGEM Patras Med started the creation of a graphic representing the DNA structure, in which for the illustration of DNA bases were used images from iGEMers that each one holds a corresponding base. Our Team thought this was a creative idea and wanted to contribute by sending a photo of a member holding the nucleobase Thymine.

International Day of Safety and Health
iGEM Crete

We were invited by iGEM Crete to join the creation of a collage with photos of lab safety experts to celebrate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28th of April. We were excited to accept the invitation and send a photo from our lab safety expert.

World Emoji Day
iGEM Aboa

Since the fun part is not missing from iGEM, we could not resist the game challenge from iGEM Aboa for the World Emoji Day. All we had to do was to create and upload on social an emoji that represents our team project in the best possible way! We were excited to accept the challenge and make our own emoji presenting our project to the whole iGEM community in a creative and fun way!

Survey
iGEM McGill, Queens iGEM, Cornell iGEM

The McGill, Queen's, and Cornell iGEM teams have come together to create a bacteria book for the public requiring information from the teams about their favorite microorganisms. Our team chose to share information about the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa that is directly related to our project. The form was filled out following extensive research into the literature and the gathering of all the data related to the cyanobacterium. We were inspired to participate in their project and help them with their goal.
