Instructors

Jongwoo Kim

As a primary instructor of the Seoul_Korea team, he always supported team members with lab experiments and human practices. When team members were struggling with difficult synthetic biology concepts or human practices, Jongwoo Kim put his best effort into helping us. Jongwoo Kim suggested the Korean ocean expo, Tae-an oil-spill memorial, and more human practices locations to enrich our projects. Also, under the supervision and guidance of Jongwoo Kim, our team was able to complete our lab experiments successfully.

Chris Song PhD.

Dr. Song significantly supported our team with lab experiments and education on synthetic biology. Whenever our team members struggled with the concept of “synthetic biology,” Dr.Song provided necessary lessons and lectures on synthetic biology. Also, Dr.Song always supervised us during all the lab experiments. Therefore, our team was able to conduct safe and successful lab activities throughout the project.

Jin Rhee

As a student advisor, Jin acted as the connector between sub-teams, editing the team Wiki pages as well as securing funding through grant applications. He also worked in entrepreneurship, notably helping to plan and prepare a stall exhibition in the Korea Ocean Expo.

Seoyun Park

As head instructor of Safety & Security assisted students in drawing safety cartoons and assisted in organizing plans for writing safety manuals.

As head instructor of the Entrepreneurship and Human Practice teams, Seoyun Park led interviews and visiting preparations. Seoyun also assisted the students in preparing for the expo held in Songdo.

Jane Jung

As head instructor of SDG, Jane set up interviews with UNGC (United Nations Global Compact), helped construct the outline for the ISCART conference, and helped construct the action plan for cold-emailing and cold-contacting possible speakers.

As sub instructor of the Collaboration team, Jane, with Harry Son, planned out the action cue sheet for the ISBC.

As sub instructor for Safety & Security, she assisted Seoyun Park and the team in the education session on safety regulations in the lab at the art school for elementary students.

Jihwan Do

As head instructor of Inclusivity, Jihwan helped facilitate meetings with institutions for the visually impaired, such as Siloam Welfare Center. He also helped in designing 3D-tactile education material for the class held at the Seoul National School for the Blind.

As head instructor of media, Jihwan was in charge of photography, videography, and graphic design for team promotion and social media content.

As sub instructor for Human Practice, Jihwan accompanied us on field trips to other rural cities, such as Taean and Tongyeong, and documented the footage.

Jonghoon Jeon

As head instructor of education, Jonghoon helped contact various institutions to set up education opportunities, such as teaching elementary students, a class for the visually impaired, and participants in our competition.

Jonghoon also helped in establishing, arranging, and conducting the debate competition for university and high school students.

Students

Hyunwoo (Harry) Son

As the first leader of the Seoul Korea team, Harry was eager to work and lead the team. Harry, alone, wrote the proposal for the ISBC and succeeded to get a total of 9,000,000 KRW (5303.54 USD). Not only that but Harry planned, and successfully created the ISBC by himself which later resulted in great benefits to the education, communication, collaboration, and partnership of team Seoul_Korea. Furthermore, Harry created the interview question for the Tae-an Memorial Hall and interviewed the curator. Moreover, Harry was the only student to volunteer and to go to Tongyeong to meet the CEO of Seabank which gave a significant impact on both Entrepreneurship and Integrated Human Practices. Harry contributed to almost all of the wiki drafts, enhancing the quality of work and persuasiveness of the wiki. Lastly, he coded and designed the team wiki so that it is aesthetically pleasing. He posted all of the content on to the wiki in a structured way where the audience can conveniently view the text in one sight.

Henry Lee

As a leader of the Seoul Korea team, Henry always led the team with great enthusiasm and compassion. Henry significantly contributed to lab safety, human practices, and wiki completion. Thanks to his designing skills, Henry created three safety cartoons and laboratory safety manuals and planned the visit to the elementary art school for safety education. Also, Henry organized an interview with the Tae-an oil-spill memorial officer and his school biology teacher regarding lab safety in high schools. Furthermore, Henry visited various human practices activities such as Ocean Expo, Tae-an oil-spill memorial, and more locations. Lastly, Henry organized our team’s accomplishments and successes by writing wiki documents.

Jay Choe

As a leader of the SDG and human practice teams and a member of the education team, Jay facilitated the SDG team by planning thorough schedules and procedures, scheduling and conducting interviews, as well as contributing to research for the teams. Jay was present at the Incheon Ocean Expo, discussing the iGEM project with numerous relevant government officials and buyers, and also visited the Taean Oil Spill Memorial at Taean. Some examples of Jay’s work in Seoul_Korea were leading the SDG team to several activities and interviews, co-writing educational material created by the education team, as well as contributing to a large sum of the team’s wiki, including SDG, education, project description, and implementation.

Eunseok Choi

Andrew is an active and passionate communicator. As a member of the education and human practices, Andrew significantly contributed to planning the Korea Ocean Expo, Tae-an oil spill memorial, and art school education.

Ewan Huh

As a member of the project and SDG, Ewan worked with Jay to increase the quality of the work.

Kaden Lee

Kaden is a member of the inclusivity team and safety & security team. Using his outstanding talents in math and robotics, he helped Spencer and Jongwoo Kim create the hardware.

Minkyung Song

Minkyung (Katie) is a member of the inclusivity team. She also visited the Ocean Expo and Tae-an oil spill memorial and engaged in human practices.

Rachel Lee

As the leader of the education team and member of human practice team, Rachel always passionately supported our team. Rachel created the PPT for kindergarten students, accessible audiobooks, and more materials that can help the quality of education.

Sungwon Hur

Sungwon is a member of the education team. He also visited the Ocean Expo and Tae-an oil spill memorial to help our team with human practices.

Spencer Kim

Spencer is in charge of the inclusivity part. Spencer actively contacted Seoul National School for the Blind and university professors regarding the inclusivity part. Also, Spencer contributed to creating the modeling sample for blind students. With the collaboration with Kaden and Jongwoo Kim, Spencer contributed to the hardware creation.

Taehyung Kim

Taehyung is the most extroverted and interactive member of our team. When our team visited the Korean ocean Expo in Incheon, Taehyung actively communicated with the audience. Also, Taehyung is in charge of the entrepreneurship part and always strives to lead his part to the best result.

Lab Experiments

We truly appreciate that all our team members passionately participated in lab activities. Although Rachel, Spencer, and Taehyung stayed outside of South Korea, they always attended lab activities and lectures through online meetings. Also, other teammates in Korea consistently engaged in lab experiments and writing lab reports. The Seoul_Korea team’s lab experiments were done with everyone’s passion and enthusiasm for synthetic biology.

Additional support

Besides our instructors and team members, we want to appreciate a few other significant supporters of our project. We appreciate the head officer of Tae-an oil-spill memorial, who accepted our interview questions. Through his enthusiastic support, our team was able to learn more about Tae-an’s history and dramatic change in the ocean. Also, we appreciate university professors and high school biology teachers who provided lessons on synthetic biology and interviewed on laboratory safety. Furthermore, we appreciate the principal of “The Seoul National School for the Blind” for allowing us to visit schools and interact with visually-impaired students. Besides the people we mentioned above, more people and organizations supported our team throughout the project. Again, we sincerely appreciate all the help we received; thank you!
