Hello, my name is Keaton Brown, I'm a 4th-year Biochemistry student with a minor in Science Communication. I love iGEM because it allows for a certain level of creativity that is so often lacking in typical STEM courses.

Fun Fact: A fun fact about me is that I know every word to Lauryn Hill's Ex-factor by heart.

Sai Senapathi

My name is Sai Senapathi, and I'm a junior pursuing a degree in Biochemistry. I enjoy iGEM because it allows me to explore concepts I learn in the classroom in novel and exciting ways.

Fun Fact: One fun fact about me is that I compete in robotics competitions in my free time.

Jeffrey Chuong

Wet Lab Co-Lead

I'm Jeffrey Chuong, and I'm a rising sophomore majoring in Biology and Biomedical Engineering. I enjoy iGEM because I think synthetic biology and genetic engineering is cool. I also like how iGEM makes you think about the broader impacts of your project outside of work done on the bench.

Fun Fact: I sleep with socks on.

My name is Vivek Beeram. I'm a sophomore majoring in Neuroscience and Plan II. I enjoy iGEM because of the collaborative approaches to wide ranges of issues.

Leia Jiang

My name is Leia Jiang and I am a junior studying biomedical engineering. For me, iGEM is an eye-opening experience because it encompasses so many facets of research, from wet lab work to collaborating with other scientists.

Fun Fact: A cool fact about me is that I can solve the Rubik’s cube blindfolded!

My name is Neil Tian. I am a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry. I love that iGEM prioritizes research of the current issues that are affecting our area because I have the opportunity to better understand the community I am living in while trying to make it better through research.

Fun Fact: One quick fact about me is that I have traveled to every continent except Antarctica!

Nate Brant

My name is Nate Brant. I am a sophomore pursuing a degree in Biochemistry. I like that iGEM allows for me to take an active role in a student-led research program.

Fun Fact: A fun fact about me is that I enjoy playing video games in my free time.

Sandy Nguyen

Sandy Nguyen, sophomore, biology major. I enjoy how iGEM introduces me to synthetic biology topics and ideas that I might not have learned about otherwise.

Fun Fact: I play the clarinet.

Samer Salman

My name is Samer Salman, I am a sophomore Neuroscience Major, with a minor in Business. I enjoy iGEM because it provides an outlet for undergraduate creativity in a professional lab space and permits students to explore topics with an extended degree of autonomy in said lab spaces. The notion of working in close contact with seasoned and adept researchers to solve particular problems and learning to think like a proficient scientist while curating our findings in an effective manner are also alluring facets of the iGEM competition.

Fun Fact: I enjoy sketching and writing in my spare time.

Adam Franco

My name is Adam Franco, and I am currently a sophomore studying Biology with a minor in Healthcare Reform and Innovation. I enjoy iGEM because it provides a unique research experience that allows us to be challenged and motivates us to make a substantial impact on our environment.

Bill Tang

Bill Tang. I am a 4th year, majoring in Biochemistry. I appreciate how iGEM gives students the chance to invent the solutions for the problems they want to solve.

Macy Horn

I am a 3rd year, double majoring in biology and humanities. What I really like about iGEM is the emphasize on merging science with education and outreach.

Fun Fact: A fun fact about me is I've been to 7 countries outside the US.

Meet our Mentors

Dr. Jeffrey Barrick

I head a research group in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at UT Austin that studies microbial evolution and synthetic biology. It’s been my privilege to mentor the UT iGEM team since 2012. It’s always exciting to see where the creativity of the students leads the project.

Fun Fact

I've participated in a 25-hour continuous reading of Moby Dick at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Dr. Dennis Mishler

I run the "Microbe Hackers" Lab within the Freshmen Research Initiative at UT Austin, amd have advised the UT iGEM teams for nine years now. I love working with the students and seeing them grow and learn about research!

Fun Fact

I am an avid boardgamer, including euro-style and wargames.

Matsuri Rojano

Matsuri here. I am a fifth-year PhD student in the Biochemistry program. I like how iGEM allows you to think how can you apply SynBio to solve problems in your community.
