Meet Olly the E. coli, the hero of our children's book. As part of our desire to transfer education to a multitude of ages, we decided to write a children's book aimed at a younger audience.
Consultation
We consulted with Daniella Elcun-Hoory, an educator and lecturer for 25 years who specialized in curriculum planning, regarding how to make educational content accessible to children in a way that would be clear and interesting. She emphasized the importance of platforms that are outside the box.
Our goals for the children's book:
1. Introduce children to science and synthetic biology.
2. Intrigue children to engage in science and synthetic biology from a young age.
3. Emphasize the values we believe in and work according to them: kindness and friendship.
Synopsis
The book tells the story of a bacterium named Olly, who is known for not being very nice. In order to be kind, he goes to a professor who gives him different genes, using tools from synthetic biology. The various genes give him qualities such as kindness, compassion, and generosity. Eventually Olly becomes kind and wins his friends back with his pleasant behavior.
