Due to working with invasive species, safety was a major concern. We did not want to cause an ecological disaster by allowing any form of the moth into the environment. We ensured this by not working with live moths, and handling the moth’s enzymes with care. Our iGEM lab is biosafety level 1, so we employ typical microbiology safety techniques, including using nonpathogenic E. coli and yeast, using PPE such as gloves and lab coats when appropriate, and a sink for hand washing. Our parts did not leave the building and were carefully transported between labs.
