Every individual, regardless of background or experience, should have an equal opportunity to engage with scientific knowledge and technological development.
When recruiting members to our team, special attention was paid to ensuring a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds. For a long time science has been done mostly by straight cis white men causing certain issues in methodology and range to go unnoticed. Each of our team members has unique aspects that ensure no one is unheard. For example, Roksana Riddle is a trans woman who grew up on a michigan hop farm. Roxy has been on hormones for around a year and a half causing her to take particular interest in projects related to hormone therapy in application to post-menopausal and trans women. Roxy is also a lesbian and lives with her girlfriend. Through her membership in the LGBT, Roxy did her best to ensure gender inclusivity in our language and practices. Anna is an Asian American and the first member in her family to be pursuing a degree in the STEM field. Anna is also a practicing Methodist and Jenna is a practicing Catholic. It is important to both members that when it comes to religion and science, there are certain beliefs that need to be rooted and to help other team members respect people who practice religion. Ram is a Canadian citizen who also identifies as Indian-American. Ram is also a conservative, and ensured that his viewpoints weren't pushed under the rug. With all of these different backgrounds and cultures, our team is a great representation of what the STEM field should look like. It is a great way for all of the team members to learn from each other and to respect everyone’s opinions and choices.
