Alex

Alex Epshtein
BSc Global Health and Social Medicine, Year 3

Hello everyone! I’m Alex, one of the Team Leads of the KCL iGEM Team 2022! I’m in my third year studying Global Health and Social Medicine, on the Neuroscience Pathway. I have a particular interest in science communication and public engagement, so I really enjoyed working on this side of the project by helping spread knowledge of Synthetic Biology, and hopefully inspire the next generation of scientists!

After I complete my Bachelors, I’m looking to pursue psychiatric research, primarily focusing on reforming the Mental Health Act in order to increase patient wellbeing and treatment in psychiatric hospitals! Participating in iGEM this year has really helped me grow my confidence and improve my writing skills, therefore I hope to use these skills to help provide a voice to marginalised and underrepresented communities.

When I’m not studying I work in a bookshop, so you can usually find me reading or stacking shelves. I love giving out recommendations, so if you’re looking for a new read or just struggling to find one, I’m your guy!

Nicola

Nicola Allen
BSc Pharmacology, Year 2

Hey everyone! My name is Nicola Allen and I am one of the Team Leads for the KCL iGEM 2022 team! Currently, I am a second year Pharmacology student specifically focussing on neuropharmacology and the treatment of chronic pain.

Throughout this iGEM experience, it has been so eye-opening to learn more about the recent and future advancements of synthetic biology. This has inspired me to find more opportunities to be a part of synthetic biology after the competition, and I am proud to announce that I have accepted the position as a committee member for SynBio UK!

In my free-time, I really enjoy singing and cooking. At dinner, you’ll probably catch me doing both at once! This summer I have also started to get back into reading and swimming, and I’m working my way up to doing 3km each session!

Zeta

Zeta Ioannou
MSci Pharmacology, Year 3

Hello everyone. My name is Zeta and I am delighted to be one of the Team Leads of the KCL iGEM Team for this academic year! I am currently in the third year of my MSci in Pharmacology with a Professional Placement Year degree, and I working at GlaxoSmithKline for a year-long placement!

We have all worked very hard to devise a new project from scratch these past few months and I am excited for everything the future year has to bring!

A fun fact about me is that I am a bodybuilder and I speak 3 languages fluently, so if I am not doing iGEM-related things, I am probably at the gym!

BSc Biochemistry, Graduate

Hello! I’m Luke, one of the instructors for the 2022 KCL iGEM team! This is my third year getting involved in the iGEM competition. The iGEM community has given me the opportunity to meet so many amazing individuals, where fantastic and innovative ideas and solutions are shared each year. In my spare time, I really enjoy listening to podcasts and music, as well as playing the bass. I also love to read, especially books about well-being and mindset! In the future, I aim to travel the world, and hopefully settle into a role in immunology research!
