In the presence of benzoate, the benM transcription factor will bind to the benM binding region and induce the transcription of fuGFP causing green fluorescence of the cell. When the benzoate is degraded into catechol, the catM transcription factor will bind to the catM binding region and induce the expression of a red fluorescent protein (mCherry). Thus, the construct is able to sense the presence and degradation of benzoate. |
