Our journey to iGEM
Every student who was interested in joining team the 2022 Wageningen iGEM team was invited for the first weekly meeting on the 11th of January. Here, students gave a short introduction about themselves including what subjects they found interesting. A general brainstorm plan was made. The following weekly meetings we brainstormed about different project ideas, dove into related literature and scraped unfitting project ideas.
Early March, the 11 students who wanted to go for the 2022 iGEM team had two potential iGEM project ideas. On the 14th of March, all 11 students started the iGEM related course of Wageningen University, named: Team-based Synthetic Biology Project Design.
Here we learned about several research methods, like how mathematical analysis/modelling can be used to interpret data and how to design our own experimental subprojects as part of a larger synthetic biology project. During that course on the 18th of March, we settled for the project idea Colourectal. We continued with our research and divided subprojects so we could start writing our research proposals. These proposals and the science part of the iGEM subproject counted towards our individual Master thesis. As initial literature research and proposal writing came to an end, we were allowed to start in the lab at the start of May.

Sponsors
For supporting our project, our sponsors are truly essential. Without them we just would not have been able to conduct our research the way we did now.
Special thanks “There is a language that the vast majority of people will be able to understand – even without any previous knowledge on the topic. It’s called plain language, and it corresponds to the B1 language level. But what can it do for science and research? Plain language speeds up reading times and improves comprehension, leading to greater trust in scientific results – particularly among non-academics. As Plain Language Europe’s official representative in Germany, Supertext transforms existing texts into plain language and offers a comprehensive training and e-learning program. As a copywriting and translation agency, we also make reading a pleasure in more than 100 languages.”
