Making Connections and Learning Together

Collaboration with Florida State University iGEM team

Water quality concerns and the need for cleanup are issues faced by many communities around the world. As a result, there have been many iGEM projects over the years focusing on these topics, which can provide a good foundation for future teams’ work. As a resource for all iGEM teams, we collaborated with the Florida State University iGEM team to create a database of past iGEM team projects related to one aspect of water quality, eutrophication, with an emphasis on easy access to the abstract, parts pages, and wiki.

We also met with the FSU team to provide feedback on their wiki while it was still under development, and they did the same for us. We also shared feedback on education projects. It was great to get to know them and learn about their project, Sea Clear, and the similaritites between our projects in this way. While we did not choose to implement all suggestions, we thank them for sharing their perspective and things to think about.

Swapping wiki design feedback with the FSU iGEM team

Feedback the East Coast BioCrew provided FSU

OVERALL
  • More design elements for the text (color/format) would help draw attention to key points
  • Experiments and results section could be combined to establish a cohesive structure
  • Use headings to improve scan-ability and access to screen readers
  • I love the carousel of images on the Home page, however the links to various pages there is a little anxiety-inducing, confusing, and ultimately distracting.
  • I don’t think that’s needed since the links are easily available on the top nav
  • Maybe instead of links to the various pages, you can have a snippet of text/information related to your project… if these correspond with the images, it will also correspond to each page (though without links), giving a subtle and sub-conscious overview of your project.
FOOTER
  • Social is visible, useful
  • Section “Goal” is great but maybe use a title like “Who We Are” or “Mission”
  • Alternatively can start immediately with, “Sea Clear - FSU’s goal is to use synthetic biology …”
DESCRIPTION
  • Images to support the text would add interest, especially of algae
  • Don’t need to indent paragraphs
  • Provide link to “recent paper”
  • Could be moved to homepage to provide an overview of the project from the beginning
  • Opportunity to advocate for policy/enforcement that would address the issue further upstream (farming practices), while acknowledging need to do something in the meantime
IMPLEMENTATION
  • Could show the steps as a flowchart to demonstrate the sequence of tasks
  • Summary (1-2 sentences) describing the cliff-note and extended section
  • For marketing plan consider what types of events could get customers vs investors then also how the type of language needs to change depending on the group you’re interacting with.
CONTRIBUTION
  • Before the SBOL info, a short sentence explaining that you are making two contributions
  • If someone has trouble accessing or using the icons, would welcome them contacting you? If so, might be nice to add that at the end.
ENGINEERING
  • Document title says “Communication”
  • Diagrams are fantastic. Might look nice centered.
IMPLEMENTATION
  • Looks good centered, although different from other pages
  • Heavy text seems appropriate given the purpose of the content
  • Would be a lot easier for users of screen readers to access the table if it were coded in HTML rather than as an image. It’s possible to describe it in alt text but at that point, you may as well just write HTML.
HUMAN PRACTICES
  • Great writing
  • Maybe start with a short sentence about what IHP is for non-iGEM audience, because it’s a great page and I think will be useful to lots of non-iGEM folks.
  • Typo: “Action has been taken by many activists, researchs …”
  • I think the star-shaped bullets are a little distracting
  • Could add more detail on what you learned from talking to stakeholders
  • Good description of how it has informed your project
  • Typo:”Manatees are creatures of habitat with mothers teaching their young migration patters so they know how to instinctively find food.”
  • “Our Solution and Project Description” section could be added to homepage as general description

Feedback FSU provided the East Coast BioCrew

OVERALL
  • I really like how the information flows
  • Great eye catching figures
  • The project description is simple yet straight to the point
  • Remember to properly cite your figures/images
FOOTER
  • Could include more contact information in addition to the email
Collaboration
  • Collaboration page is well organized
  • I suggest including the other teams logos to make it look more “professional”
  • Include more pictures
CONTRIBUTION
  • The contribution for future IGem teams seems really interesting and useful
  • However the structure seems to be hard to follow
  • I would suggest to change the font color as well
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
  • Great project description
  • Lots of eye catching figures are always a plus
  • I really liked how you mentioned other alternatives for PCB mitigation and explained their downsides
  • I think it would be nice to explain in further detail the implementation of the bacterial gene into yeast
  • Explain in further detail the negative impact of PCB (graphs, percentages)
IMPLEMENTATION
  • “Their location in water lends itself well to being treated in a bioreactor which contains both types of bacteria in our project” I feel this sentence is confusing and hard to read
  • Instead of just saying “Because our proposed bioreactor solution would heavily impact the environment, we reached out to our local EPA representatives” explain in detail how does it affect the environment
  • Even if it has a big impact on the environment, explain why the benefit would outweight the harm
IMPORTANCE
  • The text is really hard to read, I would suggest to change the font color
  • Try to explain in more detail the detrimental effects PBC has (graphs, percentages)
  • Economic impact
HUMAN PRACTICES
  • I liked how you started by explaining what is the Human practices section
  • The human practices section is one of the main sections of the wiki, take time to double check it
  • I would like to see more in detail how your project would impact mitigation of PCBs (what is the removal efficacy, who would benefit from the removal of PCBs?

Collaboration with University of Maryland iGEM team

In August, we attended the Mid-Atlantic iGEM Meetup, hosted in College Park, MD by the University of Maryland iGEM team. We were able to present our project to multiple teams and get useful feedback, and we were able to provide feedback for the other teams as well.

We also participated in the ongoing collaborative project initiated by the University of Maryland iGEM team. As a group, all the teams decided to create a children’s book to introduce a younger, broad audience to some of the issues in our area and some possible synthetic biology solutions to them. The main character of the book is an astronaut who travels to several different worlds. Each world is experiencing one of the problems identified by each iGEM team, and the astronaut learns about the problem and how the inhabitants of that world are attempting to solve it.
