Overview

New Methods of Publicity on Synthetic Biology

Taking advantage of the Internet, we united multiple iGEM teams to make synthetic biology courses, which were placed on websites frequently visited by young people such as Bilibili (a site like YouTube). We created comic cartoons and held art exhibitions to spread synthetic biology in interesting forms. Besides, we also held an award-winning contest to encourage everyone to actively learn the knowledge of synthetic biology. What’s more, we carried out various lectures, and disseminated synthetic biology knowledge on special traditional festivals.

Our object

Because we have transformed synthetic biology into understandable and interesting content, our education is widely available to people, ranging from teenagers to the elderly, home to abroad.

Our influence

Our videos have been posted on the website for more than 10,000 views, and our comic have been viewed for more than 3,000 times. Due to our educational influence, Beijing Institute of Technology has supported us to establish an iGEM startup team, and we have made contact with Beijing Genshu Technology Co.,Ltd., and hope to develop further collaboration.

Lectures and Courses

In order to further promote synthetic biology, we have carried out several lectures on synthetic biology, which have been posted on various platforms for more than 10,000 views in total. Based on such results, we believe that we the influence of synthetic biology and iGEM will be expanded,if we keep spreading synthetic biology knowledge to more people through Tencent Meeting, Bilibili, YouTube and other platforms.

Public Course of Synthetic Biology

Tsinghua and FAFU iGEM teams formed a league that united 10 iGEM teams together, including BIT, and held a series of online public courses for senior high school students through Bilibili and BIODO MENTOR.

We surveyed the participants, asking them whether they understood synthetic biology and whether they were willing to study biology related majors, and we got positive feedback from them.The organizer recorded the course and uploaded it to the Bilibili, which gained nearly 6,000 views, and even attracted audiences from different countries.

Public Science Course of Synthetic Biology

The BUCT iGEM team, together with the BIT team and other teams of 12 universities, organized a series of online public science courses through Tencent Meeting and Bilibili.

Our online science course was divided into two days. There were 60 students who participated in the live course. The organizer recorded the course and uploaded it to the Bilibili. Up to October 4, 109 views had been received.

We cooperated with SUSTech team to carry out lectures related to biomedical engineering for students who had just finished their college entrance examinations,and who had the opportunity to major in BME in the future.

This lecture was held by Zihan Yan of BIT and her senior high school classmate Yijie Wang of SUSTech, which faced to their alma mater. This lecture provided senior high school students with the choice and introduction of relevant majors from the perspective of college students, which stimulated their interest in synthetic biology.

Disseminate synthetic biology to youths

In September 2022, BIT and BIT-China jointly held an lecture at campus both online and offline directed to freshmen and students from Changping No. 1 Middle School.

We mainly introduced what the synthetic biology is and involves. We also prepared gifts for students. For high school students,our presentation can broaden their horizons and help them understand more about synthetic biology, which may inspire them to select this field in the future.

Disseminate synthetic biology to freshmen in Partnership with FAFU

We held the lecture to freshmen with FAFU in Room 203, Chuang Xin Building, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University through Tencent Meeting. 231 college students from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University participated in this activity.

In the meeting, we shared the experience of the competition, the preparation for the competition, the background of the project in the 2021-2022 and the idea of experiment design.

Mid-Autumn Festival Special: Synthetic Biology-themed Gathering

Mid-Autumn, which is the traditional Chinese Festival falls on September 10 in 2022, which was also the day when the freshmen of Beijing Institute of Technology returned to the campus.

We prepared gifts with iGEM and BIT logos. At the same time, in order to spark the interest of synthetic biology for the freshman, we invited BIT-China and our partnership CPU_CHINA to give introductions on synthetic biology and set up quizzes on synthetic biology during the Mid-Autumn Festival. All the students participating in the activity received gifts.

We began to plan our activities from the middle of August, gradually determined the theme, content and time arrangement of the lecture and the planning of the joint lecture, and invited the BIT-China team and CPU_CHINA team to give lectures to the freshmen from different perspectives with us.

In the lecture, we actively interacted with participants, awarded prizes, and encouraged them to play an active role in understanding synthetic biology.

The three teams introduced their projects this year and exchanged their synthetic biology methods during the lecture. We also introduced synthetic biology and iGEM competition to freshmen from different aspects.

The freshmen participated enthusiastically during our presentation. Our WeChat push gained 454 views and questions from the freshmen after the presentation.

On the Mid-Autumn Festival, the BIT team held an online quiz for students at Beijing Institute of Technology.

In the early stage of preparation, we reviewed the basic content of synthetic biology and the excellent projects of iGEM in 2021, and made 29 single-choice questions as quizzes for students. Based on the difficulty, it can be divided into green-hand level, middle level and ultimate level, so that everyone can choose one of them to participate according to their abilities and interests.

On September 2nd, our team released quiz, which would be valid in one-week.

During the activity, our WeChat push has received 159 views, which attracted more than 70 students to participate successfully. At the end of the activity, gifts were offered to each participant based on their scores on the quiz. Through this activity, many freshmen had a preliminary understanding of synthetic biology and gained a lot through answering the questions and searching relevant information. They expressed their positive attitudes to participate in similar activities in the future!

Art education

In this year, in terms of art education, we combined the project, synthetic biology, cartoons and art exhibitions to let more people know about Pain related to synthetic biology, and improve the awareness of everyone.

As a popular media for young people, comics can also serve as an important way to disseminate synthetic biology. Therefore, from June to September 20, the BIT team cooperated with the FAFU team and other teams to carry out the activity themed "Comics Project, Talk about Science", drew comics about their own projects, then published them on September 20. In the end, our comic books reached 1026 views through WeChat push.

This activity popularized the knowledge of synthetic biology by means of comics, and promoted the iGEM competition. In addition, the activity promoted in-depth communication among domestic iGEM teams, deepened the cooperation between the BIT team and other teams, and strengthened the atmosphere of solidarity and cooperation among domestic synthetic biology communities.

Synthetic Biology Art Exhibition

What kind of sparks will be generated when art combines with synthetic biology? We and our fellow CPU_ CHINA held online art exhibition together. This art exhibition combined our friendship, synthetic biology and art together to promote a special art exhibition. We are expecting more people to learn about iGEM and synthetic biology under the aesthetic atmosphere.

We divided the art exhibition into three parts: "Germination", "Initiation" and "Cruitousness", representing the process of our two teams' first meeting with synthetic biology, understanding iGEM competition and finally getting to know each other through this competition.
