Our Team
Our Team

The Queen’s IGEM team, also known as QGEM is an interdisciplinary design team that works on a different project each year pertaining to synthetic biology. With each new yearly project, a new group of three to four executive members are selected to lead the team who take on the roles of wet lab lead, dry lab lead, outreach lead, and with the exception this year, director. These four individuals are responsible for the completing the project at hand and making sure everything runs smoothly going into the annual IGEM Grand Jamboree. These four executives also work closely with a faculty advisor as well as a student advisor to consult ideas, and to seek guidance throughout the project.

Although the executives handle a good chunk of the project, our dedicated volunteers play a huge role in supporting our team. This year, 16 total volunteers worked with our executives to provide support in all aspects of the project such as research, lab work, 3D modelling, outreach, and more. Together with the help of all our volunteers, we were able to successfully develop our prototype as well as remain organized throughout the duration of the project.

Below, you’ll find all the students and staff who helped make this year’s QGEM team a success, as well as a little bit about themselves and what they accomplished this summer!

Rachel Neita
Biochemistry 4th year
Rachel is a fourth-year biochemistry student who volunteered with QGEM as a member of the wet lab team. She decided to join the team to work with peers to tackle an important problem impacting individuals within the Kingston region. She is very interested in continuing to expand her knowledge of biochemistry and hopes to work in the biomedical research field. Outside of school, Rachel likes to read, collect vinyls, and spending time with friends.

James Liu
Biotech 3rd year
James, Third Year, Biotechnology. I joined QGEM this summer because it's a great way of applying science to benefit society.

Yamin Ben Letaifa
Life Science 4th year
I am Yamin Ben Letaifa and I am going into my fourth year of Life Science Specialization. I joined QGEM because I was really intrigued by the fact that it was a student led research project. I thought it would nice to be apart of that community and would give an opportunity to interact and learn with other students in my field. A fun fact about myself is that I speak 3 languages.

Caroline Pundsack
Chemical Engineering 3rd year
My name is Caroline and I am going into my third year of Chemical Engineering. I grew interested in water treatment through several projects I was involved with in first and second year, and joined QGEM this summer to continue learning about filtration devices.

Ryan Wei
Life Science 4th year
My name is Ryan Wei. I’m currently going into my fourth year of Life Sciences. I decided to join QGEM to get the chance apply my previous experiences and learn new ones. Also, I really enjoy working as a team towards a long term project too. Something cool is I can wiggle my ears on command!

Hannah Schwartz
