The Battle of Red and Blue: Biosensors to Detect Microbleeds
The klein blue sea gives the world double tenderness, as the saying goes "When a whale falls, all things come to life.", namely, the normal death of whales will benefit other creatures in the ocean.
However, if the whale eats a large amount of food before it dies, these foods will gradually decay, producing a large amount of methane, hydrogen sulfide and other gases, and improper handling will cause whale explosions. It is enough to see that the significance of the gut and the microorganism in the gut to living organisms.Likewise, it is also very important for human. This year's NWU-CHINA-A was inspired by marine animals and focused on human gut health. (Click here to jump to Integrated Human Practice)
Over the past two decades, several population-based studies have demonstrated a decline in the incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding compared to the previous one, but the decline in case fatality is not pronounced and remains between 5% and 11% overall. In addition, acute gastrointestinal bleeding has been one of the most common acute critical illnesses worldwide. The incidence was reported to be 47-150 cases per 100,000 person-years, and the overall mortality rate in patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding ranges from 3% to 15%.
The intestine as part of the digestive system plays a vital role in the human body. Intestinal bleeding is a precursor to many diseases and can be caused by a variety of diseases such as enteritis, tumors, intestinal tuberculosis, perianal diseases, and so on. Colonoscopy is currently the most commonly used and effective test. A member in our team had a colonoscopy due to stomach bleeding, and she had multiple examinations due to the difficulty of finding the bleeding site, which caused her great pain.
At the same time, there are still some remote areas in China with relatively backward medical conditions, and people often cannot be found and treated in time when they get sick. Intestinal bleeding, if not examined and treated in time, will often lead to serious problems. Massive intestinal bleeding can be directly judged by self-perception and by changes in the color of the stool. But if it is a trace of bleeding, we cannot make a timely judgment and perception. Therefore, we are working on the design of a portable intestinal micro-bleeding detector this year , so that intestinal problems can be early detection and early prevention.
