CADMIUM
- is a toxic metal
- enters the environment from mining operations
- contamination of soil and foodcrops is a ubiquitous environmental problem
- accumulates in plants (e.g. rice, tobacco, cereal grains and vegetables) and animals
- has a long half-life of about 25-30 years
- exposure may be related to various type of cancer
- used in rechargeable computer batteries, contacts, switches and solar systems
